designed to burn oil? what a load of crap. my 1.6 didnt use a single drop. obviously a tiny amount of oil is used to lubricate the piston rings and is then burned in the combustion chamber, but this usage should mean your car is still above min on the dipstick after 10k.
the most likely explanation is a leak, such as at the sump plug or sump. check carefully for signs of leaking.
at 70k you would not expect this oil usage to be due to a worn engine, but you can do a compression test to check. do it dry first, then add a few drips of oil to each cylinder and repeat the test. if you get better compression with the oil added it suggests you're burning oil.
also check the crankcase ventilation system is clear and there is no oil getting passed into the intake.
other option is a head gasket leak. if a compression test shows low compression on one or more cylinders that does not improve when you add some oil, it suggests the head gasket could be the cause. have you checked all the sparkplugs for signs of oil?
