OK, here's one for the mechanics out there.

We all know that some IC Engines can be affected by cold causing difficulty in starting, but why?

Does the cold affect:
  • The fuel system (pumps & injectors)
  • The air system (Carburrators etc)
  • The oil system
  • The electrical system (Plugs and points)

Come on, someone must be able to enlighten me a bit.

oil doesnt really affect starting apart from a bit more initial friction before the oil circulates.the electrical system is probably affected most by the damp in the air and the fact your trying to create combustion in a cold engine with cold air and cold fuel.cold air carries more 02 per cubic foot than hot air so should actually aid combustion.fuel isnt really affected on starting but carbs can ice up but usually when driving with the cold air coming in at speed.thats about all i can add but im just an amatuer with the spanners so im sure there will be more accurate replies:I

So what you are saying is that the likely cause of poor starting in the cold is damp eletrics?

on modern cars poor cold starting is proubaly due to a sensor fault not telling the ecu how cold it is.
