Wheel Painting!

I've got a query and hope folks here can help.

I've got these wheels

Regrettably because I live in the middle of bloody nowhere, and roads aren't really roads, the tiny little bolts the whole way around it have got stone chips and the chrome has flecked off a few of the bolts. It's like a washing machine that just ruins shiny things.
Anyway, it upsets me nigh on daily when I see them.

What I want to do is repaint those bolts, possibly just chrome, or maybe a nice chrome colour of some sort. Before anyone says it, the bolts do not come out - fake splits lol. I contacted the company and they reckon they've got to be drilled out. ugh.

1) How would I go about painting those without accidentally covering the whole blinking wheel in paint?
2) Would PlastiDip or similar be a better alternative seeing as I can peel any over spray? anyone had any experience with a job like this?

1, masking off a section of the rim at a time( ideally a sheet with a section of holes in line with the dodgy /rusty parts)

I would then use a bead blaster / maybe a dremel.. to get the bolts down to solid / bare metal.

2, use the mask technique again to cover a few at a time with primer / base coat,
to keep oxygen away from the bare metal.., then you can use whatever as a visible "top-coat" - paint / film , etc.

Cheers. My real concern is masking perfectly around a circle, although I'm sure it's not impossible. The last thing I want to do is fork out a fortune for a refurb (could jus replace the wheels), or paint over perfectly good chrome!

get a cardboard box,
bit of string and a pencil,
draw arcs on card for inner and outer WHEEL RIM diameters,

then measure / use compasses for the pitch of the "Boltheads"

pierce / drill those few bolt holes , offer-it-up to the rim

should give sufficient protection to the remaining good chrome, and let you abrade the crusty stuff in relative safety.

That is so absolutely logical and makes total sense, and so not what I would have thought of. There's a reason I come here for pointers first! Thanks!

Now just gotta choose a colour!
