i want to do some spraying on my car and hvlp gravity fed guns seem favoured, had trouble finding a gun that required less than about 9-11cfm and can't afford a big compressor, but have come across a gun on ebay that needs 4.2-7.1cfm, if i was to get a compressor with a 7.8cfm air displacement would i have any problems with paint delivery and getting a decent finish?

thanks

think, if I was using a lower end compressor i'd be tempted use a conventional spray gun.
HVLP guns require a lot of inward pressure from the compressor as they atomise and mix the paint in the gun, the pressure that leaves the gun is much lower.
The bonus is that there is less wastage of paint as most is not lost in overspray.

hopefully someone who has ahvlp and smaller compressor will pass on their experience. I would imagine even with a hvlp on a smaller compressor that your results will be plenty good enough. The lacquer, if using 2k might be where it struggles a bit more.
