Talking Newbie in need of caliper painting advice

Hi Guys and Girls!!! I am completely new to 'FF' as well as driving as a whole!

I just bought an '04' Fiat Punto Mk2B sporting (95bhp). I plan to do a few things to smarten it up, but don't want to go too far cos I think it's a pretty sweet car from stock.

My first project is painting the brake calipers. I think I want to do them red and have researched doing it... But basically I'm wondering what you guys think is the best and cheapest way of doing it?? Hammerite or specialist paint??

Sorry the thread is a bit lengthy lol!

Cheers in advance, Rico

Here you go sunshine!

Personally i'd go high-temp engine paint... the hammerite seems to soften up and hold brake dust.

Re: Newbie in need of caliper painting advice

i done this on my polo i had befor my punto,

make sure you rub them down first to get all brake dust off etc. by using a metal brush or something strong.

i would use high temperature engine paint aswell, cause brakes get very hot,

try to do it in a secluded area because when its drying road dust and stones etc will stick to it,

put one coat on then leave till it dried then add another coat, its a days work id say or half if its really hot,
i painted mine black cause it looked suttle and nice, didnt look dirty either from brake dust, just shiny
good luck

Re: Newbie in need of caliper painting advice

halfords sell it in smallish tins they do specific caliper paint about £5 a tin just go steady with it its really thin

Ideally take your pads out first to keep them clean if you know how if not a small brush and a steady hand..

other stuff that might come in handy..

Alloy wheel cleaner such as AG wheel cleaner to clean the brake dust off the calipers.

wire brush to remove any rust

emmary paper to roughen up

disc cleaner to prep the metal and remove any grease (if you have any copper slip on the back of the pads it will wash it out hence removal of pads is a good idea)

lots of thin coats rather than one thick mess. (a mate of mine applied it with a 1" paintbrush very thickly then spent hours cleaning it off his alloys as it hadn't set overnight and had like a spiders web from his rear drums of paint

Re: Newbie in need of caliper painting advice

please for the love of god dont paint the hubs lol calipers in red look tasty but not hubs also if you want to go to the trouble of taking the caliper off the car you can get a paint kit in halfords not just the tins talked about a few posts ago , this is a kit and the finish of the red when its done looks sweet
