Touching up - Unable to get even coat.

Hi all, I own a bright red metallic Mk1 punto, and it had a patch of bubbling rust below the boot lock. I removed the rust and sanded it down as best as I can, the resulting area is about the size of a finger wrapped around the bottom half of the boot lock. I bought a halfords kit to re-paint it, and put a multiple layers of the red primer, which I then left to harden, and lightly sanded down to get an even finish. Whenever I try to apply the metallic paint, I am unable to get a smooth coat, it always looks streaky once applied, and I do not want to have to remove and start all over again as I only have this week free. Would multiple thin coats do the trick? I plan to apply a laquer once the paint has dried. I am using either the brush or 'precision applicator' nib.

Am also getting a similar issue with a scratch on the passenger door, am worried about the result looking obvious despite the right shade of paint.

Thanks for any advice.

you need to build the layers up once its just below flush with the paint surface it needs a light rub back with some p2000 ish wet and dry soaked in water and car shampoo but slightly over lap this with the sound paint it will marr the finish of the good paint (ideally soak the paper over night) then rub it back with a cutting polish (t-cut metalic isnt the best but is easy to obtain and polish out the marring. next apply the lacquer so it overlaps the sound paint in a couple of thin coats.

next rub this back with p2000-3000 grit and polish to blend in with the paint..
