Right, Im not sure if anyone is interested but Ive made this blog as a place to log my cars life/mods as time goes on. If you read this and have any comments or questions please use the form bellow
My car was bought some time at the end of 08 with aprox 60K with 5months tax and mot and full history for £450 but a blown head gasket.
I replaced the gasket within 2 weeks of owning the car and it has ran perfectly ever since. only thing to go was a coil pack...
And a front shock last month which kicked off all my modding.
I replaced all 4 corners with Bilstein dampers and Apex Springs + fully polybushed and custom made fully stainless brake hoses.
the whole under side of the car was cleaned and stonechipped then painted and then coated with clear Waxoyl.
built myself a induction kit using the cap from a 899 cinq.
made new faces for the dials *LINK* and carpeted the rear wheel arches.
fitted window switches into the doors and filled the hole left in the dash with a vacume gauge. ...
Next I was looking for a P75 cam to fit so i started going around scrap yards.
Most of them tried to tell me ALL fiat engines where the same and tried to sell me any old crap.
I then came to one which has all the engines from the cars pre-removed and in a shelter. Armed with a list of engine numbers, rubbing down paper and a 10mm spanner I found me a p75 engine.
When I asked about the mileage they had the engine logged as only having 9k on it.
So the next day I took the engine from them for £100 and got a P60 SPI throttle body.
When I got the engine I jet washed it to remove the oil/dirt that it was covered in to find a PERFECT engine.
First I removed the throttle body and started matching the parts up from it onto the P60 TB to make a nice big TB which I have now fitted to the 1.1 and love it
Now onto the engine.
There is lots of talk on the forum that the SPI manifold will NOT fit the MPI. this couldn't be more wrong. Due to the design of MPI the 4 studs that hold the intake manifold to the head are 15mm or so higher. But fiat have done us a favour of keeping the ports and bottom studs in the same position.
For a person with basic tools the manifold could be fitted with a mix of small and large washers (or pay someone to weld extensions onto the alloy)
Me been a bit of a perfectionist who likes to do everything himself (aka tight arse ) I plan to machine 4 brackets to bolt on.
These pics will help anyone who don't follow.

spi manifold on mpi head
Next I noticed the ports on the mpi head are not the same shape as the SPI due to the injectors. This was a easy fix. just bolt the mpi gasket onto the spi manifold and reshape the ports with a rotary tool (needed doing anyway as the casting inside the manifold is shocking!) I also smoothed out the ports on the head.
update 10th june.
Did loads of work on the engine today. I did a bit more smoothing of the intake ports and totaly overhauled the exhaust ports.
I noticed a few things with this head. the head on my 1.1 does not have the hatch effect on the outside. as far as i remember the ports on the 1.1 head are not cast as smooth as this P75 head. (took my a LOT longer to clean the ports on the 1.1 when i did it) but the biggest thing is the casting around the back fo the valve seats. on my 1.1 head the casting was really rough and you could feel the sharp edge of the steel seat.
But on the p75 head the casting is much better with the valve seats having a rather smooth flow onto the alloy head with only a SLIGHT edge on them. about 20seconds work on each seat with a sanding drum made them seamless.
As usual heres some pics :-)
right two done!
I have also painted the cam cover italian flag style ... pics to come :-)
update 11th June
Finshed my porting today. wont upload pics as its nothing noticable.
Recived my FF stickers and put them on.
Also bought a oil temp gauge as I want to keep my eye on the oil temperature with the p75 engine. I expect it to get somewhat hotter then the standard lump which is hot as it is imo.
Ive been looking at where to fit the oil temp sender. (???)
Update 17th June
Aint done much over the last few days as ive been busy with my bike.
today I removed the modified throttle body from my car and refitted the old one (slow as f*** now! ). Only removed it so I can finish matching the port on the intake manifold for the new engine.
Managed to get it all ported/painted/fitted. seems solid enough and im quite happy with it!
Tomorrow I need to pick up my new clutch and see a bloke about getting the head skimmed (not sure if it needs it but i see a few pits im not to sure about)
Also started to weld up a stainless exhaust manifold/downpipe no pics yet sadly (forgot)
Update 19th June
Not much. picked up the clutch and got head skimmed! And painted a few bits. will start putting the engine together soon
update 19th june again
got bored and put the engine together! looks to good to be hidden under a bonnet imo [center]
update 18th august:
Oops forgot to update in 2months.
well the engine was fitted and started first turn of the key but I did have a few teething troubles with the injector light flashing.
Turned out (after weeks of pi$$ing about) that I some how plugged the reverse switch connector into the solnoid and also having a faulty idle valve
I have now also fitted a supersprint manifold and decat.
and bodged on a motorcycle can.
Rear discs
the bumper has also been cut up to help cool the engine down which has worked out VERY good.
Since thats been sorted the engine has been flawless.
...So it would now seem the project it over... well no... this blog is getting to long so after the following pictures to story will carry on. CLICK FOR PART TWO |
