Hi there!
First post, FIAT noob.

I am looking into buying a B.
I have seen one today, 2001 model. ~40K km. Drives nice, no rust, just what i need.
However, getting under the car, I was able to spot a pretty big leak around what I think it is the gearbox.
Pictures attached.
The oil seems a bit dirty. From what I read here, it might not be gearbox oil, but engine oil.

Can anyone look at the pictures and give me an idea if this would be a simple fix-it operation or a costly one?

Thanks in advance!

Could be crankshaft oil seal weeping a bit of engine oil into the clutch housing. It doesn't look that bad, is it actually dripping? I guess to change that seal the gearbox would have to come off. Anybody changed a clutch? I assume you would have to take gearbox off to do that.

Doesn't look that bad to me either. Can't see any drips either. Looks very much like long term 'misting'.

This would indicate a small crank shaft seal weeping. It is quite rare for such a leak to cause problems (e.g clutch plate contamination) as flywheel centrifugal and wind-age forces only allow oil misting deposition between the block and the reverse side of the flywheel. These then just gently gather and flow out via gravity.

I've seen similar on the Punto HGT / Barchetta 1.8 engines as a result of the cam box gasket leaking round the cam shaft pulley area where the gasket rises and falls. These bends always seems to eventually leak and then again small amounts of oil drop down the front end of the block migrating to the sump/block lip on the front or back or both of the block working their way to the flywheel/gearbox end.

In the pictures shown the sump face below the lip looks fairly dry so would tend to indicate a crank seal. I would have a good look all around the block/sump to see if the oil is coming from elsewhere.

No it doesn't look that bad to me either. Here we oil spray every year so it's supposed to look like that if you drive it during winter. Summer toys don't get sprayed so it's a little different with them.Iv'e had a persistent seepage in the left front corner of the rocker box gasket since doing engine work so try and see where it's coming from. A rear main seal is a big time pain to get at.Can be more trouble than it's worth
