Hi guys,
Just got a new gaiter for my gear shift

How do I get the gear knob off

Looking forward to the warmer weather and get the b out the garage

Rob

I had to cut the gear knob off with a hacksaw blade, from the bottom of it upwards. This cuts the securing ring holding it onto the gear lever shaft.
So if you are changing your gaiter, you need to change the knob aswell, as i did !!!!

Thanks for your reply,

I ended up cutting a little of the stitching , just enough to fold the leather back,, then slid a small electrical screw driver up under the knob, and I think I got lucky, the released the clip and off it came.

New gaiter on now. Looks great

Cheers, roll on next week, get it taxed and back on the road

you wouldn't happen to have a picture of that clip would you. I would like to remove mine to replace the gaiter but would never allow myself to saw it off.:)

Thanks I see it but I don't know if I understand it. Do you have a pic of the top of the shaft? If worst comes to worst I may have to ruin the original knob, tap the shaft and screw on a new after market one.

Don't have a pic
I just cut a little of the stitching , peeled it back just higher than the indent and then pushed a thin electrical screwdriver up under the knob and moved it around to feel the lug at the same time with my other hand pulling up on the knob

Sounds a bit 50 shades lol

But you will get there be gentle and fiddle around

Just thought I’d give you all a tip on gear knob removing.
If you know a plumber or heating engineer see if they ever come across 1/2 inch stainless steel pipe. This is really thin wall pipe.
Cut about 3 inches off, split it in two and round the ends off.
Lightly clamp the two pieces on the greased gear stick with mole grips and slowly move upwards while turning it side to side. Then when it goes no further gently tap upwards with a hammer and voila:-

It’s off.

I was fine with all the talk about shafts, and pulling up on knobs, but when you got on to hacksaws and mole grips, I suddenly didn't feel very well. ;)
