hi all, ive joined the ranks today with a bought unseen car which seems fine given the age and money, barring some niggly jobs which I seek the advice of the masses here;

- some white smoke when starting, and when running to be investigated, though car had previously been stood for a while and I would <hope> an Italian tune would fix once all fluids have been checked and confirmed. however I am aware that this could also point to other things so proceeding with caution on this one.

- slightly lumpy idle though hope again it is due to being cold / little use. out of interest, where should the temp gauge sit when car is up to correct temp?

- left car idling earlier for about 10min and felt that the OSF wing was quite warm, is this usual, EG, does this petrol engine emit a lot of heat in this area?

- bonnet release handle broken, can be used with some technique but hope to replace this - how hard can it be?!?!?

- small section of roof-to-window rubber to be replaced,

- windows are very sloooooow in winding, I recall this was a Punto folible, is this the same on a Barchetta, or simply a weak battery with not much charge?

- as per a separate thread, a modern stereo unit really does not suit the lines of the dash in my own personal view!

sorry theres a bit in there, cheers in advance (y)

Hi welcome to the exciting world of discovery, fun and excitement of Barchetta ownership. Firstly I would caution against an Italian tune-up unless you know when the cambelt was changed and how many klm it has done or age since the last change, otherwise italian tune-up can be a daily experience.
It definately gets hot in the engine area but my temp guage sits just below halfway most of the time and that is in the summer of SW France.
C'ant help with smoke but I would look at the condition of the spark plugs to see if one was particularly oily. Lumpy idling could be related to a spark plug/sparkplug wire.
Slow window electrics are normal I beleive, I lower and raise mine if I can with the door open so when I close the door with the window shut the rubbers seal well. Similarly when I put the roof up or down (not often as I usually have the roof down) I open the doors.
I am looking forward to hearing your adventures with the car.
Hope others pitch in also.
Good luck
StevePD

thanks for the replies thus far - appreciate it.

belts were changed earlier this year and can had been serviced. its just stood for a few months after. will try fresh petrol later maybe this was stale if been in car for over a year which is possible given the mileage.

where is the original radio shown - I have looked over barchettaparts and cannot see it anywhere!

job for today is the bonnet pull - are they easy to change?

I used the attached advice from the UK Barchetta's club site technical pages.
http://www.fiatbarchetta.com/btech/doortrim.html lubricating the moving window slides cured a slow window and as been no problem for the last three years. Warning though, do be carful with with the door opening handles they can be brittle. I'm no mechanic but found it an straight forward DIY job.
