Hope someone can help me, I was driving along and notice my fifth gear poped out while I was driving, so I put it back in and kept driving and kept an eye on it, I've noticed when I accelerated or decelerated the stick shift moved a lot back and forth. when I decelerated the stick shift fell out of gear. Now I kept my eyes on all the gears and just notice that the stick shift moves a lot when I accelerated and decelerate this just started. so does anyone know whats going on here I have a 1997 B with only 67,000 km on it. hope its going to a easy fix

thks  Henry

Could just be the control rods that have become un-attached. Simplest one to check is under the bonnet, it's a short control rod that has a ball and socket at each end, one part connects to the selector on the gearbox housing the other end connect's to the selector rod that goes to your gear lever. The selector rod is also connected via a ball and socket to the top of the steering rack housing , this is a right pain to get to.
Probably best to have someone move the gearstick around so that you can watch it's operation under the bonnet, removing the battery and battery tray would help you to see better perhaps.
Good luck

Hi Henry. I had trouble with my B's shifter this summer. My wife and I drove with friends (beemer rag top)to Pittsburgh, PA. It was incredibly hot and the QE was packed all the way to Niagara. The car had only 23k, on it but I'm sure the heat and constant shifting did the damage. The heim joint just plain self destructed.Pulled into a shop in Port Allegany, where we got it working again. It worked well enough to let us enjoy the week and get us home. I have 28k on the clock now but I still want to check out exactly what they replaced the joint with. It doesn't feel quite the same. But so far never pops out of gear. That is usually a sign of worn linkage. That heim joint is tough to get at but a good place to start.

Hi eramosa where is the helm joint located love to get this problem fix so I can enjoy the ride before the winter comes

Hi Dave. The heim joint is at the other end of that rod. When you remove the shifter boot you can see that rod and the reverse cable.Every thing was fine there on my car. But the shifter would just wobble around because the next joint, the ball and socket ,aka, heim joint was totally disconnected. They used a bronze bushing and small nut and bolt to get me home.Still working fine although at present I'm replacing the right side strut and inner cv boot.I still want to investigate what they did and go back to a "ball and socket" set up

I just finished putting back together the boot shift and sifter, was a big job I'm telling you but The heim joint under boot shift is in good shape. I also check the cable on the transmission and its OK. Nothing is loose. so I'm a little confused now. tomorrow I'm going to try and check the engine mounts. if anyone has any idea whats going on here please let me know tks.

Check item number 3 the rod linkage.

Also the pivot bush item number 4, this is really hard to get too, it pivots on a pin that's on the top side of the steering rack. Item 3 connects to the long rod that goes to the gear lever.
Just a long shot.

tks Dave I'm going to check them out something is going on here and I have to get to the bottom of it and fast.

go figure I just got my B up on ramps to check the under side for my problem of the 5th gear popping out and notice that the inner right CV boot is tore grease all over.:bang: Now where can I get one. anyone know where I can purchase one if it is cheap I'll buy the whole set for both side for the future, just in case.
still didn't have real time to check the hem joints under my B just got upset of the CV Boot being tore. If it is not one problem it's another getting upset I'm fixing more the driving. I only put 1,000 km on it since I got it this year and winter is around the corner and I'm going to putting it away in storage. I just wish that I can drive one more time before she goes to sleep for the winter.:cry::cry::cry:

I only managed 100 or so miles in mine this summer before it conked out. It's now tucked away again until next year. The joys of B ownership.

I'm learning that now, have to be a mechanic to enjoy the B
