Hi guys,

Does anyone know how to get a spare key cut? I have a 2000 Barchetta, are the keys chipped, or coded in any way or can I just get one cut from a key cutting place on the high streets? I have a third key which starts engine but for some reason doesn't open the doors (doesn't fit the lock). I know that's weird, but anyway...

Thanks for any replies.

Danny

All Barchettas up to and including 2005 models use the Fiat Code System 1.

This means that:

1) All keys have a unique RFID transponder
2) There is a Master Red key
3) Each car/key has a mechanical/physical lock profile

With 3) you can have keys cut but they will NOT allow the car to be started

With 1) you can have an existing key "cloned" and physically cut which will allow both mechanical lock operation/entry and engine starting.

The downside of this approach is that if you lose a key then unless you have the master key as in 3) then you will not be able to deny access/operation of any previously lost or stolen keys.

Thanks for this reply. So basically if I want entry and engine startup, I need to get the key cloned? I have the master key. Where can I get this done?

also, i have a broken key, where the metal has snapped but the piece where the chip sits is in tact. Can this piece be reused with a new key?

Hi,
I think that as long as the key transmitter in the broken key is close to the ignition key slot or steering wheel boss then this will disable the security and allow a cut key to work.
Some people have even taped this part of the key to the underside of the steering wheel area permenantly. However, this of course means that you have no security on engine starting/immobilising and your insurance may be compromised.

I live in Johannesburg, and found four locksmith/key shops which were prepared to clone my blue key for me. This was successful, so if you have the key find a similar place. Prices quoted by manufacturers are out of the ball park, and I paid very little to have mine done.

If you have the red master ley then all you need is a new blank key with the correct type of RFID chip in it. The Red Master Key can then be used to program the new key into the system.

A replacement key will be available from Fiat or you can go to an independent locksmith who will be able to read your old key to establish chip make and type and then will be able to get you a new key.

You also say you have the original broken key/blade. This chip could be extracted and re-used. This is your cheapest option because all you need is a blank key cut and you then either extract the old key chip and figure out how to put it into the new key body or you just attach the old key body/head to the key ring of the newly cut key.
