Hello,

I've decided to modify air intake/exhaust on my Barchetta. Removed all the hoses to throttle body and started stacking them again, but in different order :) I think I'll go with the original first hose which has an additional hose intake on the top (1st picture). About it - I've seen some modifications in the forum for this tiny hose to have a some kind of "oil filter" at the end (another picture). Can somebody explain me what this hose is for and what this modification is for? Originaly it is connected to the air intake hose after the air flow meter.

Also since most of the threads about air filters are quite old, I would like to ask for filter suggestions. There are a lot of very cheap (for 15 euros) filters on the ebay. Are they any good? What intake diameter filters have you used? If it will be mounted directly to the air flow meter part, it should be no less than 85 mm, and the supply for these filters is not very wide.

This tiny hose you talk about is the crank case breather. By redirecting it to the intake, the fumes are burned trough the engine instead of venting straight to the outside. This is an emissions thing...

Since you don't keep an engine clean by running oil fumes (or exhaust gasses trough an EGR system) through the engine, connecting the crank case vent to an oil catch can with a breather or the other side, and plugging the hole for it in the intake plumbing is a popular mod.
 
Thank you, I'll look into it. That must be the reason I found first intake hose before the throttle body all oily inside. And hopefully this would solve malfunctioning throttle flap, I get engine errors time after time because of it.
 
Regarding the options, your first Photo shows a cone type filter attached directly to the AirMass meter, Although this method works it is affected by the heat from the exhaust and also the general hot environment of the engine bay. I have at the moment this option, and on warm summer days I could notice the power difference, I have now fitted a deflector in an attempt to shield the filter from the exhaust manifold, also included a cold air duct to direct air from the front lower grill. This does improve the performance, but on really hot days my car still suffers from a drop in power.

The second picture is of KC's excellent car this filter is of the enclosed type and takes the air directly from the front of the car. Notice that Kiry has also fabricated additional air ducting to keep his air filter in a cool environment.

Thank you! I can see you are using K&N filter. In general I think that a closed box could be easier to handle and less possibilities to loose power. But sondwise does it also make that nice growling noise that a system with cone filter would produce?

Nice engine bay by the way! :)
 
Don't know about the sound difference, never had two together to compare. And yes its a K&N on mine, I'm sure cheaper ones are available but with regular cleaning and re-oiling it is lasting well. I was going to have my exhaust manifold ceramic coated, to try to get the under bonnet temprature down, but other necessary work on the car has blown the winter budget.��
Note that on Kiry's car he has moved the Battery into the boot, so that he can accommodate the filter and oil catch tank.

It happens so :) My car's front bumper needs re-painting, but it will wait until the next season :) As for the exhaust manifold - I was thinking of using a stone-fibre wrapping tape. Supposingly higher inside temperatures would speed up the gas flow and increase HP. Not sure about it, but if the temperature under the bonnet will go down - I will be happy.

Not sure if battery is moved into the boot.. I think he only used a smaller one so there is more space for this huge air filter box.
 
Your right regarding the battery, just looked at the image, it was Doc Orange peal who moved his. battery to the boot.
I was unsure of coating or wrapping the manifold, but I got a cost of £150 for coating thought it was fair price.

Most of the cold air kits don't include any ducting to front of the car - Might to cut and modify the factory set up - any ideas - maybe "KC" is making more in his basement...
 
Follow-up picture. Intake has been modified 2 seasons ago, really impressed with the sound and performance increase. However I also done a straight-through exhaust, so this might be mostly contributing to the power increase.
Exhaust manifold had been wrapped with heat tape, also direct cold air inlets had been added.
