Hi,

I haven't been active on the forum for years but my B (yellow from november 1997) has hardly been used the last 4 years due to other activities (motorcycle related) :(

I have 1 problem which is irritating me immensely: the dashboard has a huge squeal that is there since almost day one.
It is so dominant that it is the main reason I don't drive the B (65 km over the last 5 years).
What could it be since I don't mind to solve it but do not feel for a trail and error exercise with the dashboard.
It sounds if it is the top part of the dash.......

Is it just mine or is it a common problem?

Hope your experience can help me with this problem.:)

Frank

Not a problem that I have encountered Frank, what area of the dash, drivers or passengers? Is it only whilst you are travelling or when you are just stationary.
The only noise I have experienced is the wiper motor relay, due to seized up mechanism, but I would have thought that by now your relay/ motor would have expired by now, if this was your issue.
Give some more detail I'm sure someone will be able to advise.

Do you mean a squeak, such as when you go around a sharp corner/go over bumps you hear a squeak, or an actual constant long squeal?

If it's just a few squeaks, then it could be the mounting of the CD/Cassette player in the dashboard. When I was driving my B, I seem to remember that holding the CD/Cassette player would almost entirely stop the squeaking.

I think that the squeaks are just typical of a plastic dashboard, and not too much to worry about. Maybe strengthening the CD player unit could stop the squeaking.

My dashboard squeaks and creaks too, especially over bumps and on uneven roads. It seems to come from where the dash meets the screen. A strut brace would probably help, by reducing scuttle shake. if yours is making a squeal rather than a squeak, I'd have thought it was mechanically-related (drive-belt?)

Sorry, I mean squeak.
It is all the time when I drive (I do have a strutt brace by the way) as if the road is very bumpy
Got the idea that it is in the area of the radio, but I have tried to hold my hand on it but it won't stop.
Might not be a big deal but it drives me crazy.:bang:

Really would be happy if someone has experienced it and solved it.:worship:

You say it's from by the radio? You could try taking the radio out, & see if that cures it. If it does, you'd need to pack it with something when you put it back.

I get a creaking noise from around the glove compartment and it only started after I fitted a strut brace. The B is not used much and for the kind of driving I do I am not convinced that a strut brace makes much difference to the handling. One day, when I can be bothered, I will remove the brace to see if it stops the creaking.

I had the same squeak. The problem was the plastic part around radio and heater had cracked around the fastening screws, one in each side of the radio and one in the middle bottom edge.
I replaced the part, sprayed the new (used) one with silicone spray from the back side, and carefully reassembled with slightly bigger screws. So far so good.
