I will soon be re-trimming my steering wheel with black leather.
my question is how does the airbag deploy, does the center trim part hinge in some way to allow the airbag to inflate, or does it split in the center for it to inflate. has anyone got a picture of one that has gone off.

Now competed the retrim, quite pleased with the results

Did you re trim that yourself? Looks good and id imagine it is very very hard to re trim a steering wheel

I must confess I didn't do this myself, I have a very good friend who is a trimmer by profession.
The wheel is retrimmed in leather with contrast stitching. The thumb grip area's are cut to allow the leather to be tucked in. One of the hardest parts was to find a glue to stick to the steering wheel, despite keying the surface.
Very pleased with the results, next its the rear area behind the seats, also a retrim of the door cards.
As a note the airbag and horn buttons are painted with an interior trim paint. Thought it best not to mess with the airbag function.☺
