I have been driving a Barchetta for 5 years with only one blue key. Clearly this is very risky. I need advice as to what I can do to rectify this situation, and am in South Africa where I have the only Barchetta so cannot swop control boxes etc with anyone else.
Anyone know please?

Does your key have the 2 symbol on the blade? If so, it's likely to be dealer only in ZA (some places in UK can do it but they need to plug into your ECU, ponsaloti can advise further). If not, pretty much any decent auto locksmith should be able to do you a working copy.

Thank you Elipze, I will get onto that site - No, there is no "2" on the blade, only a symbol which I cannot identify. On the blue/grey part there is an alpha-numeric four-digit number.

Do you mean to say that you are worried that if you loose the blue key (which I assume has a chip inside) you would not be able to start the car due to the imobilizer ? Well.....not ideal, but why not consider having regular copies of the key made.......hide the blue key somewhere within the car (you decide where) and then you can use any of the copy keys you have. I would consider a secondary theif deterrent also.

If you are worried about leaving a key in the car then just cut the top of the key off that contains the chip and hide that part. Probably ok in south africa. Of course this is only meant as a last resort and secondary remote alarm system would be advised.

Now this is what I do not understand. I had a key cut which fits and turns the ignition. I placed my coded key as close to the keyhole as I could, but it will not start. Oh dear!

HP the new key is simply a dumb piece of steel, there is nothing electronic about it. I tried starting the car with the blue key held as close as possible to the ignition switch (all round the switch) but nix. Maybe the aerial is indeed deeper into the ignition switch. Frustrating! One day my blue key is going to break!

Ah ok all sorted! When I started the thread, there was no such thing, but key places in Johannesburg now have a cloning device which cloned my blue key, and provided me with a newly cut key which fits and which now has a chip which works too. Problem solved. It cost me the equivalent of about 40 Euro. I am so relieved to have a back-up key at last. Thanks all for your contributions. - Dave
