Thought I'd get little 'fico' out this afternoon despite the wild weather down here in the south west and went down to Seatown near Lyme Regis and wow it was really blowing! Went and looked at the waves crashing in and then suddenly realized that it was all salt water in the air so got out of there as quick as I could!

Had a great drive on the way back and put him through his paces on country roads Exeter instead of the A35, went really well but noticed a couple of problems.... passenger window rattle; strange ticking from the cam belt and after shutting the bonnet I went to open it again and the catch is stuck! Very annoying, any ideas for fixes appreciated.

bang the bonnet with the heel of your hand sharply, directly over the catch

Do it as close to the front lip of the bonnet as you can - any higher up and you'll dent the bonnet, for sure (and be aware that you may dent the bonnet anyway, no matter how careful you are, as a B's panels are wafer-thin).

Thanks for the advice chaps, I did manage to get it open with mole grips and dismantled the bonnet catch mechanism again to see what was going wrong. Bit difficult to explain but where the spring is held in place by its coil the raised spigot that goes through the middle of the coil is very low and the coil sort of slips up it a bit making it somewhat inefficient. There's a small retaining bar which can be opened up and closed tight with pliers so took it apart, cleaned it up and then fitted it back together and really tightened the retaining bar back down on the spring with the pliers, this holds it much more efficiently on the spigot thing and no slipping. Just for everyones info.

Just a heads up. I'm getting the timing belt, pulleys and variator changed and popped over to my mechanic to see how it was coming along and he said he had a mystery.

The alternator belt, which I replaced last year was strangely thinner than standard and the plastic guide wheel on the pulley had disappeared. What looks like has happened is that the plastic guide wheel on the pulley has disintegrated, stripped the alternator belt and the tensioner adjusted so that the belt was running on the pulley spindle!

I do remember hearing a bang last summer and had a check around but could see nothing so I assumed I had maybe flicked something up off the road.

So thought I would mention it if you wanted to have a look at your own guide wheels. Mine is a '97 with 146k on the clock.

I'm sure you'll all be please to hear, it passed the MOT!

Fuel filler cap rubber seal and polish of the headlights that was all that was needed.

Yes Pete get it in there, this time of year I think is good timing for an mot, means that all next summer will be worry free (well relatively) motoring.

As a result of getting it passed Mrs Stum has even taken to driving it to work, top down, in the dark and fog and low tempretures - good for her I say!
