Hi All

I have just bought myself a Barchetta winter project and am looking for some advice.

The car in question was first registered in Germany in 1995 and imported in 1998. I have a bill of sale from a company called Land Marque Tuning Company in 1999 showing some modifications that they carried out to the car including
- engine management work
- Chrome rollover hoops
- Supersprint exhaust
- Novitec rear spoiler
- Drilled and groves discs
- Racetec traction control
- Tora alloys with single nut hub conversion

The car appears to have then had an engine failure in 2004 and has been in dry storage since then. I have an MOT from 2004 showing 76,000 km and it is now showing 77,000km so that appears to stack up.

I have a replacement engine that will be installed early in January which will hopefully see the Barchetta on the road to recovery.

Has anyone heard of the Land Marque Tuning Company and their work on Barchattas? I am particularly interested to find out about their engine management modification work. One document that I have states that that it was modified to 260bhp but I think this must have been a typo as surely 160 is more realistic?

Any input would be appreciated.

Cheers

Dave

And from the webpage
Style with Panache

The Barchetta - with RacingBrand-supplied styling and tuning options - provides an unforgettable driving experience, truly combining Style with Panache!

Now your Barchetta can really makes heads turn.

The delicately sculpted front spoiler is complemented by an elegant and distinguished boot spoiler, and with Mono Toora alloys dressed with Bridgestone F1 tyres.

The interior is set off by the beautiful 76mm polished stainless steel roll-over bars, and specially designed wind deflector.

Further forward there is a carbon fibre-look interior decor, and stainless steel kick plates and foot rest. Also, real aluminium floor mats.

We can also remap the engine management system and add a straight-through stainless steel and aluminium exhaust system with a stunning 4.8" X 3.2" chromed stainless steel oval end pipe.

The 145 bhp achieved also provides a massive torque improvement, and this Barchetta is now a true "driver’s" car, with its roadholding capability more than matching the extra power.
This means that the care is more than able to compete on equal terms with cars costing over twice as much! Even more power is available using our special camshafts

Full electronic traction and launch control (as previously fitted to F1 cars) is also available, making it impossible to spin the front wheels - even in the wet! This adds to safety, and massively reduces tyre wear.

Other Tuning Options

In addition to those listed above, RacingBrand can provide:-

Performance Exhaust Systems - Complete Hormann Motorsport systems, back from KAT - including DTM-style - and sports air filter, plus Kat replacement

Alloy Wheels - Beautifully-styled high-technology wheels - 15"/16"/17" - including stunning chromed wheels

Interior Decor - choice of decor kits in Aluminium-, Carbon-, Titanium, Walnut, Mahogany-look

High-capacity Brakes - Grooved, Perforated, Ventilated Performance Brake Disks Front/Rear and Performance Pads at Front

Sports Suspension - from simple tuned lowered springs transforming both handling and aesthetics, to fully adjustable strut/spring combinations. Aluminium strut brace.

Thanks for that. Saved me messing about trying to up load the photos (y)

Hopefully the engine bay will have an actual engine in it the next time there are any photos to post.

Cheers for the notes of support, much appreciated.

The more I look at this, the more I think you've got yourself a fantastic project there, Dave, and hopefully a great bargain too!

I hope so too!

I would be interested to hear any views on the single nut hub conversion with the Toora alloys. They need a refurb and new rubber so was thinking about getting another "normal" set rather than bringing these back to life. Would you trust a single nut rather than four? Answers on a postcard...

Cheers

Old classic roadsters always had single nut wheels. I think they found it easier and cheaper to manufacture 4 and 5 hole wheels and hubs.

The garage where the Barchetta is at the moment is a man down so they are a bit behind on their workload. They are getting onto it this week......

We have progress, but not good news unfortunately :bang:

A replacement engine has been installed with a new clutch and timing belt. All the relevant bits swapped over from the two broken engines that came with the car. The guys at the garage were just about to try firing it up when they noticed oil pouring out of the engine from the head gasket area  So much for a "good running" engine.

They are taking the head off this afternoon to have a look. Hopefully just need a new head gasket and perhaps the head skimmed. They want to having it running by tomorrow night :D

I am an optimist and always see the positives but really struggling with this at the moment.......

If you can all keep your fingers and toes crossed that would be appreciated.

Cheers

Yep I've bought 3 great running and tested engines.all with head issues, got sick of it so have had the head done on the latest one.let's hope we both are driving around with huge grins next week.

Best of luck with it, Dave.

As the saviour of a B in distress, the angels will surely be on your side!

Will need more than angels me thinks!

Whatever happens i am going to have at least two heads and two blocks sitting in my garage once the barchetta is sorted. Clearly there is a market for decent refurbished engines so I might embark on building one from the left over bits. How far can the 1.8 engine be modified to get the best out of it? More aggressive cams and some head work? Bored out to 1.9 or 2.0? Or would it be much more sensible for a standard rebuild?

Sorry, lots of questions at the moment and not a lot of answers.

Here's to tomorrow and a running Barchetta :D

Cheers
