I have this too, I believe it is one of the exhaust heat shield sections.
For me it happens when I let off accelerating at ~ 4k RPM.

Best thing to do is jack/ramp up the car and see which section of heat shield is loose by wiggling them.

I dont know what the exhaust assembly looks like... If there is a heat shield in the area, it's likely as its a very tinny rattle. I had a catalytic converter break up once and the ceramic fins rattle around making a similar rattle. It only rattles on the overrun which suggests the engine is being rotated slightly forward on its mountings and pushing the exhaust against something loose. Thumping the exhaust doesnt make it rattle so I think I need to get it up on the ramps... thanks for your help though.

Cheers

Steve

I am almost certain it will be one of the (many) heat shields which protect the floor of the car from heat sink. The rattle my car suffers from is also on the overrun and is quite loud, I noticed loose shields when I last investigated.

Have a look when you get it on a ramp and report back please.

I should probably go with the exhaust wrap idea. My B had the same problem when I bought it so as a quick easy fix I just removed the heatshield...

Probably not a good idea but it stopped the annoying rattle...

Does it sound like a (small)chain rattleing? I've had that sound for almost as long as I've had the B, and nobody's been able to locate where the sound originates

Well, the heat shield is intact and secure... I checked everything I could see and thumped the full length of the exhaust and couldnt cause the rattle.. there is a bit of a rattle from the shield itself and mate thinks there could be something between it and the underside of the car... anyway, having left the garage, the rattle has gone so the general prodding and thumping has obvious bent something out of the way... many thanks for all you suggestions... I somehow dont think I have heard the last of this rattle.

It's a fair point Steve... I was going to use a Cornflakes packet but I thought it was too big and would look silly.

Steve

I think cornflakes are bland and tasteless, you should try a Frosties sponsored air scoop. It will be GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREAT!

Sorry to bring this up AGAIN... I only have one key and one remote for the c/locking. I do not have the red key. My high street locksmith says he can clone a key from my blue key but not clone a remote. A friend in the motor trade says that he is dubious that a locksmith can clone a blue key from a blue key and that I should approach this with caution as the ECU may be 'upset' by the new key. If this happens, I would be in trouble.
Question 1: Is it possible to clone a blue key from a blue key?
Question 2: Can inserting a 'wrong' key upset the ECU?

I can manage without the remote as I only use the car occasionally and lock it with the key and not the remote.

You're thoughts, as always, much appreciated.

Steve
