Curious, has anyone converted their B headlights to be day time running lights. In Canada all cars manufactured after 1981 must have daytime running lights. In order to pass inspection I have to convert my headlights to DTR. Kits are available but not looking forward to messing with my B wiring.

Thanks
yul

Hi

What do youn mean "headlights to DTR"

For the UK?
Do you have an import that needs setting?

You don;t have to buy new lights, just take them out and adjust a plate in the back.

Day light question - Why? it would cost you in bulbs and fuel, now power consumption more fuel.

You could do a HID kit if you want brighter lights.

I'll translate!
DTR Day Time Running
Yul lives in Canada and this is a legal requirement.

I've not heard of anyone doing this on here but I bet LRB or Doc can help with advice about the wiring for the lights.

if I'm right you need low voltage head lights. so when you turn off lights only low beam with lower illumination will lite. or some additional switch will do a job. i don't know about wiring and else... but what if you put some aftermarket LED lights on bumper for daylight? is that legal?

over here we have to turn on lights only on winter seasons. now, on summer we can drive with lights off... they are no-stop changing that law about lights.

IMHO: it's better that car have always lights on, it's better noticeable event in bright sunny days. because i almost crash myself, was overtake a car and saw a car far away with lights, but didn't see car that was closer with lights of.

I totally agree with this. I spent some time in Norway and at first thought it strange to have lights on during the day but can see the reasoning behind it.

Since then I always try to drive with lights on but it seems to annoy the locals here... get lots of pointing, honking and strange hand signals telling me my lights are on..?? seems strange from a country that when it rains they all drive around with the hazard lights on...??

Headlights I can understand... not got the meaning of the hazards yet
On the few occasions you see indicators used here it means "get ready with the brakes i'm about to do something REALLY stupid"

Sorry not sure how to go about modding the car so that the lights stay on all the time but at a reduced rate... maybe an extra wire from ignition feed with a diode and a bloody big resistor? (sorry electrics not my strong point....

Luckily mine came pre-wired with DTRs (as desert rat mentions they're compulsory in Norway) (y) I really can't understand why it isn't compulsory in most other countries, as they really do help spot other cars further off, even during summer.

I'm sure some fiddling with the wires in the ignition barrel area should do the trick (even if I haven't the faintest clue ).

because of fuel saving. with lights on you spend 0.2l more (5%). if you try to calculate for every car in your country... well, that's a lot. don't know about the law, but installing LED day lights will be the best.

found some calculation that we (croatia) could save about 30.000.000 L of fuel per year with lights off.

also found some calculation that all lights take about 150W when aircon takes about 4kW... that's 30x more than lights...

Well, screw personal finances and the environment; I want to see who I crash into next :slayer:

Even with air-con on I still get 70mpg :p

Easiest way to have the lights on with the ign is to find a wire that switches on with the ign and through a relay connect to the headlights/led lights/sidelights or watever else you want but just make sure the wiring isn't part of the airbag/abs system or guess what '''Bling''' on the dash.

Better still, do the switching via a voltage sesitive relay (similar to those used for auxilary electric supply to caravans). This means that the lights will not come on till the engine is up and running and the battey is in charge/trickle charge mode. Lights will thus not run unless the engine is running. Also when starting there is no additional lighting load on the battery.

Simple'zs' .... or so my Fiat driving meerkat says....
