Been out in the B today running great, I stopped to put in petrol 30 liters up to the top, I drive home about 5 miles all is fine, but go out after tea with the wife for a run and after 5 min's I get this misfire anything below 3000 rpm above that its fine (sounds a bit like a Cobra V 8) The only thing I have done in the mean time was to wash her, but not under the bonnet! any ideas?

Dodgy petrol, water in one of the spark plug bores, idle valve fouled a bit, leak in the air intake between the air flow meter and the intake, fuel filter.......................that should keep you going for a bit, if you check that lot out and its still playing up let us know! (y)

If it's been used on a regular basis andd all you did was put in fuel I would like to put my bets on some dodgy petrol...

Failing that I think LRB covered the rest....

If I leave mine unused for a few weeks it normally idles like cr*p but a wee bit of italian tuning on a quit road (when Al isn't watching) normally sorts it out :D

Could be the petrol and the wash are red herrings?

Could be that the variator is stuck on open? This would explain things sounding smoother higher in the rev range. And certainly explains a rough idle. Though I'm not aware of them going this spectacularly and suddenly before.

Unless you have had a new variator your car will be due for a replacement being 44k and 10 years old.

If it is the variator you might be able to get it moving again by giving the car a good long run to get the oil nice and liquid again. However the ultimate solution would be a new variator and why not an early cam belt change whilst you are at it?

Funnily enough MattB2K its booked in for cam belt and variator for Tuesday so push comes to shove they will sort it for me! I paid cash for the petrol so no receipt but I'm pretty sure it wasn't diesel, I,ll pop the bonnet up this morning and have a look see, and I was hopping for a trip to the lakes!!:(

That might be what you need, good enthusiastic blat up to the lakes may blow any crap out if you have only been driving around town recently...........

Go to the lakes and take some photo's for all of us that are not lucky enough to be able to nip up to the lakes............ (y)

Didn't get to the lakes or fix the B, so its down to the garage on tuesday and let them have a look see! Alan D where are you in West Cumbria? The wife's a keen walker so we are up there every now and then, bit more often when we were on the bike:D but those days have gone, hence the B. I will post up what the problem was once its sorted!!

Just picked up the B from my local garage and it turns out that MattB2K was right, I have had the cam belt and variator replaced and the misfire has gone so it looks a though the variator completely packed up, the fuel and water were just a red herring! And on start up it is fantastically quite no rattles etc well worth it!! And I only paid £317 which seems like a good price. So now I just need an induction kit and strut brace, roll on Xmas!

Excellent price, £100 cheaper than DTR!

Drop Peter (oldschool) a PM and ask about the induction kit, I think he has forgotten about us so give him a nudge! ;)

You made my day Chris. I am astoundingly happy that I made a correct diagnosis. Sad but true.:)
