Spark Plug Cover

My Metal Engine cover that comes above the s.plugs isnt coming off.. The previous owner seems to have rubbed of the teeth on the two hex screws around the oil cap.. Anyone had similar experiences?

Anyone done modifications on a B's intake system before im planning to remove the whole intake area beyond the filter & redirect it into the nearest opening, assuming it will make the engine breathe better...

Re: Spark Plug Cover

Dunno about the cover meself but chaps have always eventually removed butchered heads or had something welded on to assist releasing the offending screws.

As for the induction mods a few have severely circumcised the intake pipe run to their own delight and added alternative filters. They say it does two things, gives a healthy manly Vroom Vroom noise and releases a further 10 - 20 (I kid you not) bhp. But there is one sceptic who is unconvinced. Yet. No one has mentioned if the mpg soars or dips, one said the engine 'hunted' afterward, another the engine was cured of its cold. Overall all favourable.
Methinks that a Pro should do this in conjuction with complimentary 'tinkering' using a rolling road but then again others have 'rowed their own little boat' Most unpro results look messy tho with bits of tube & cable ties involved. One Pro kit does look the business and it shows.

Re: Spark Plug Cover

The little hex nuts should not be in too tight, if they have been rounded totally try hammering in a hex key that is slightly bigger than the hole, that should do the trick!

There are a few options for the induction, carbon dynamics, Green and GSR are the main contenders (GSR is the only kit specifically modelled for the b)....

CasaPaulo was being very diplomatic in referring to my early efforts on a change of induction kit! I didn't buy a kit, I managed to get hold of a green filter from Doc bodged the rest together to see if I was happy with the result. After fitting mine did 'hunt' on tickover for a while, I traced it to a split in the pipe which resulted in too much air getting into the throttle - changed the pipe and job done!

CDA is a sealed unit, reputed to be very good but is a lot of work to fit as you need to re-site things under the bonnet! (take a look at Doc's thread), Green is an easy kit to fit out of the box and GSR is a great kit, also very easy to fit.

If you do go down the route of an induction kit you need to make sure you get the right one, there are two types - one for an external airflow meter and one for the AFM in the throttle body.

I am happy with the results I have gained by removing the acres of FIAT plastic ducting, mid rev's there is more power, mpg seems unaffected and the sound

Re: Spark Plug Cover

What is "the engine hunted" means?

Many people at my place modified theyre intake with cheap filters but ended up with theyre cars overheating as we live in the desert..problem was most of them didnt position the intake at an area from which outside cooler air comes into..
What i will exactly do is remove all the excess piping and get a pipe drawn from the stock filter box into the nearest cold air source.. I think i will try it for a couple of days see how it goes if it wont cause any later problems...

Re: Spark Plug Cover

I would have a look at all the induction threads before making something up yourself.

"Hunting engine" in terms I know is hunting for fuel, I've also heard it used when an engine is pinking when the timing is out.

Re: Spark Plug Cover

I have to say, if I were in a hot dusty climate I would probably stick with the FIAT setup unless you can find a way of making sure you don't suck sand and dust into the intake!

As Alan rightly explained 'hunting' is a term used when the engine cannot get enough fuel or air, results in an uneven tickover - once the engine is above tickover its not usually an issue.............
