Oil level check? warm or cold

I've got an imported Barchetta so the manual is in German. Do I check the oil level with the engine warm or cold? running or stopped?
Thanks.

Re: Oil level check? warm or cold

C/P: You can check it either hot or cold. When cold the level should be close to the bottom of the safe range. When hot it should be close to the top of the safe range.

On flat ground and the engine off for a few hours is how I do it.

Re: Oil level check? warm or cold

Think you are getting confused with auto fluid.

Oil should be checked cold, if warm there will still be oil in the head etc so gives an improper reading. In truth it only takes a few minutes for the oil in the barchetta head to filter back to the sump as most use synthetic oils which are of a lower viscosity. Never check the oil with the engine running....

Thanks.
I think someone said recently you can still order an English manual from a Fiat dealer.

Re: Oil level check? warm or cold

Ok

I guess I am one of the few with an original handbook so I will give you the fiat spiel.

ENGINE OIL

Check engine oil a few minutes(approx 5) after the engine has stopped with the vehicle parked on level ground.
The engine oil must be between the MIN and MAX marks on the dipstick.
The space between the MIN and MAX correspojnds approximately to half a litre of oil.

hope this helps

Re: Oil level check? warm or cold

anyone still got that "check oil every 1000 km" sticker on his/her B ?

I 'm checking (cold) oil level less and less nowadays.. I'm probably being lulled in a false sense of security as the level doesn't change anyways ...

if i compare the oil consumption of the B to the BL 2liter M-series in the Rover 800 i once had.... it used approx 5 liters/week
