Thumbs down HID fitting tools

Hello All,
My HID kit arrived yesterday and I am now ready to start the fitting.
Apart from the things included in the kit, what other tools/supplies will I be needing? Duck tape, tie wraps, drills, paint...??? you know..
I just want to make sure I wont be missing anything in the middle of the procedure.

I ll post pics as usual when its all done

Take care

Stavros

Re: HID fitting tools

you need to drill a whole for the grommit, cant remember what size, i think it was 25mm
i use a flat wood bit from a black spur set from a cheap shop, was only abut 3 quid for the pack and it had the right size one in

cable ties you get from cheap shop too

Re: HID fitting tools

When I fitted mine I used the following;

- Trolley jack and axle stands (when fitting the HID's to a b its much easier to get at the lights from the front wheel arches)
- Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws retaining the inner wheel arch covers
- Electric drill and drill bit plus hole cutter
- Centre punch (you will need to drill in a confined space at an angle so its advisable to put a big 'dent' where you are going to drill)
- Paint to seal hole in inner wing bracket
- Cable ties (the ones in the kit were not up to much)
- cup of tea and ham sarny if you are doing it around lunch time

I will drop you a PM with my number, if you hit a snag give me a call

Good luck, its a really easy job - a bit fiddly but worth the effort!

Re: HID fitting tools

Well, Job done in a bit more than 3 hours!!
Pics below

I found removing the arches quite hard, but i never removed the wheels :P
Second and tricky bit was the metal clip for the lamp which needed removing and refitting to fit the extra volume of the xenon lamp.
Well, all done, special thanks to LRB for the guide!!
Super handy

Re: HID fitting tools

Hey Stavros, excellent job - well done, although how you did it without removing the wheels is beyond me!!!

Makes a huge difference though eh???

It was quite simple actually but made the whole thing much harder.
I jacked up the car and then i removed the arches but not completely. I just lowered them and held them down on the wheel while working. It was a pain cause i had to push them down all the time.
The reason I didnt remove the wheels is silly but when I changed the alloys the guy put 18mm bolts and all the "cross" tolls I have for removing wheels are 17-19-21-23. So I couldnt remove them
I just hope I dont get a flat till I find an 18 key

Huge difference LRB!!! Worth every penny and even more!!!

Re: HID fitting tools

I fitted mine in a completely different way to the above, no need to remove the lamp units or jack / remove the wheels. You do however need to have a flip top head and triple jointed fingers, also Patience (wonderful girl) and a box of band aids.

I made a sheet thin sheet metal bracket that goes under under the headlamp rear mount..the L shaped one with the 2 bolt holes. The HID ballasts are bolted to this and sit neatly at either side of the engine bay. There is just enough room on the cambelt side to do this and tape off the wiring behind the unit. The other side has plenty of space. Downside is headlamp adjustment means the ballasts have to be unscrewed as the brackets block access to the adjuster screws. The standard rear lamp covers are modified to accept the new cables and clip on the same way as before

The really hard bit was locating the bulb units in the lamp housing and getting that F* Bloo*y spring clip to fit!

If I were doing it again I'd follow the fitting guide but The Man hadn't written it at the time..
