I followed the advice of the forum and I finished the front wheels last night. I'm very happy with the way they've turned out :D so thanks (y)

The spray job could've been a bit better - when I applied it, it went on a bit thicker in some places than others, then I tried to compensate by making the next coat a bit thicker in other places etc etc, but anyway when all's said and done they still look a million times better than they did before. Also there's a few manky fingerprints on the tyres but I'll have a look at that later.

In that second pic from the front wheel, I noticed that the nearside wheel only has one of those little pins that keeps the wheel mounted in place while you put the bolts in. Is this a big worry? Is their only function just to give you a hand when putting the wheel back on?

Also, that last pic, how come there's a big bronzeish circle in the middle of the wheel on the back wheel but not the front? What does that do? I only noticed it when I took off the hubcaps, which are going to get resprayed after the back wheels are done. Is it a cap of some kind that should be on the front wheels too but is obviously missing?

Righto, next job, back wheels :slayer:

yups, definately nice work (y) :worship:

pity about the oncoming salting an gritting season :yuck:, you'll have to keep m hosed down and clean.

i'll think of you if i ever need some done, cuz myself is a lazy git :D and i dont have the space, equipment and time to do this. I would have just bought new alloys.

Hehe well I just got an unexpectedly big tax bill through for some IT work that I do occasionally so buying the alloys was not an option - not for a few months anyway ;)

I'm pretty lazy too to be honest, but I'd say I only put in about 3 hours work total for those two wheels. With all that sanding down to be done, it helped that there was footy on the telly and I could just plonk the wheel in the front room and sand away while watching that. Made it a bit more bearable :)

You bring up a point I meant to ask though - I often take the car to get cleaned at one of those £5 places where the Polish lads wash the car down for you. I've heard the warnings about the paintwork, with the damage from the jetwashers, but my paintwork's in a fairly sorry state anyway with scuffs and scratches everywhere. But what about the wheels - will this silver wheel paint be OK getting jet washed??

Also, what about those 2 holding pins on the front wheel. I only have one on one of the wheels - anything to be worried about??
 
No! There should be two but as you said, they are only there to help you locate the wheel.
I would not worry about your local carwash and your wheels. Their power wash will not be powerful enough to do any damage especially at the speed they work!! You would have to have a really powerful pressure washer concentrated on a small area for an extended period to do any harm:eek: UNLESS, you have peeling lacquer everywhere then dont use a pressure washer if you dont want it to get any worse:eek:

Ah well looks like I'll just have to use some elbowgrease and start washing it by hand, at least it'll save me a fiver each time. I just bought some t-cut and a few other bits and pieces so it's probably about time the paintwork had the TLC it deserves
 
Nice work Jiggy - look 100% better!!

As SS says the small sticky out bits on the hub's are there to help you locate the wheels, on the back they also hold the spacers in place while you put the wheels back on. I have taken the locating pins off of my car as I could not fit my alloys with them in place - so you are quite safe running the car without them on!

Well done for having a go at the wheels yourself Jiggy (y), much better they will look great when all done.
The only thing i do know a little about is car cleaning and if your B had a bit of a tough life like mine then it might be worth saving the T-Cut for the moment. Run your hand over the bodywork and if it feels rough it may be covered in fall out no matter how hard you clean.
I got a great result using a clay bar and using a hose wet the car and run the clay over the B in your hand and it will pull all the gunk out.Then once done use a decent polish and then wax. Have found this a great place to get cleaning goodies :)
