Glad to see some, err "robust" discussion. I'm inclined to agree that adding too much power can ruin a good car, but I don't know enough about ti to say where that point is for a Barchetta. My personal guess is somewheer between 180 - 200bhp as long as the suspension and brakes are done too. Of course this also depends on how you get there.........

What I do know is that my brother has got a BBR MX5 1.6 on an H plate which is working fine. I think it's up around the 160/170bhp mark so if you don't go crazy and do the job right it will last many years.

Looks quite good, but difficult to tell how it drives. Is he going flat out, or taking it easy? How fast is it? In fact does anyone understand a word he says :D

now now, remember the Montego "vitesse" ?

200 BHP "off factory" bolted in a chassis designed to handle 75 BHP

it handled... well.. not at all, actually. The torque steering made sure it was always pointed to the nearest ditch or wall or tree and because of the paperthin (and paperstrong) steel body your chance of survival was...erm... not a lot.

Yet people managed to drive it.. some even around a track

Most likely becuz they poured concrete in every hole of the frame in a desperate attempt to give it any strenght

ah sweet memories... a true pinnacle of British Engineering :)

Vauxhall have just done the same thing with the VXR Corsa, madness personified!

I drove one for The Independent Motoring section the day after I bought the b, if you have nothing to do for the next 5 mins the article is here........

My tuppence worth is half way down the page, was cut down from a couple of paragraphs to a few hundred words...............

Just had a spin in a colleagues Civic Type 'R' (trying to cheer me up!!) - f**k me it is one fast car and by god does it hold the road!!!

From the outside it looks stock, under the bonnet it has been re-mapped, has a CDA induction kit, uprated discs/pads and slightly stiffer suspension - it has been rated at 230bhp on a rolling road and it feels like it!!!

I was only able to drive it for about 10 mins so did not really 'get to know' the car and took it a bit easy but I have to say I had a lot of fun in 10 mins!! It is hard to put into words just how precise the handling is, how eager the engine is, how taught the ride was, how close the gearbox is...............this is one really good, fast, enthusiastic car - and it feels well bolted together as well................. (y)

It might be all of the above but it does not look as good as the b..............

Doc, maybe you should throw away the FIAT lump and stick a type 'R' power unit under the bonnet!!!
