It's hard to comprehend here in the UK............

I am very close to the place of fires.Tripolis (my town) is in the meadle of Peloponese,Arkadia region.Pyrgos is a very nice place i used to visit very often as i have relatives there ,nonone is harmed thank God,but everything is gone now in flammes. We could see the smoke coming behind the mountain and we are very scared what will happen if the fire gets to Menalon mountain,!!!

Things are very bad,64 people dead, sheeps and other animals gone, trees burnt down, houses on fire.Very bad situation. It will take years before thinks get back on track. And the winter is in front of us.

BILL33, my thoughts are with you, your family and friends. I sincerely hope that you are not directly affected by the fires and that the situation is bought under control soon.

As I have said already it is very difficult for us in the UK to comprehend the situation, we have the odd week here and there of extreme weather but are usually very lucky and have little/no loss of life as a result.

The only positive that can come from a situation like the one you are living through is a sense of community as people from all walks of life pull together. I am always amazed at the generosity of strangers when an event like this takes place. After the tsunami two guys that I worked with at the time took 2 months unpaid leave and flew to Thailand at their own cost to help with the clear up and re-building efforts, apparently while there they met hundreds of other people from all over the globe who had done the same thing.
