Well here goes my first question of many....(already searched and couldn't find the answer)

I am changing the discs & pads at the front of my B and i have had to buy a 36mm sockets for the front hub...(which is a weird size to say the least :-S)...however, it does not slot all the way in.

with so much force going through the socket it would just round the nut.

When buying the socket i did ask for the thinnest lined socket but i think it needs machining a bit so as to fit all the way over the nut.

anyone else had this problem.........or am i just being dumb here.

p.s. i read the rear hub is 32mm

cheers peeps

If the front hubs are the same as the coupe, then its 34mm but you'll need to grind the edges of the socket off to fit in the space.

Ross

Just to confuse you if its the same as a hgt its 36mm on the front, I had to grind the edge down a bit (on the socket) as it was a very tight fit.

oh dear....tried 34mm and it was no way going to fit......the 36mm hex slips on but only 1/2 way. Seems as if it get narrower as the socket goes deeper in :-S

will try and machine it down a mm or 2

will let you all know how it goes

Definitely a 36mm.

The socket pictured went on fine on my B.

Sorry if I'm teaching my granny to suck eggs here, but...

What do you need to remove the hub for? You shouldn't need to if you're just replacing the pads and discs.

Can you let us know whether this socket fitted without needing modification, because the one we have only reaches the first 2 or 3mm of the nut, not far enough at the torque need. If so, what make is it?

It's a Halfrauds Professional but it's an impact socket (the matt black finish) as the normal shiny chrome ones only go to 34mm I think. Still works OK with a 1/2" drive ratchet/bar. Cost about £7 IIRC.

I didn't need to mod it to get it to fit - it went on fine. Not sure why your are having trouble unless our hubs are vastly different

Hope this helps...

intresting...........when i called up halfrauds they said they dont do 36mm :-S

will check again as i paid £17 for the 36mm socket i bought from a tool shop.

if your telling my you can buy the same for £7 i should maybe return it

Here is the 36mm which my dad modified to enable it to fit the tapered recess in the hub. The hub nuts, badly mangled by the PO, were removed in seconds by using the brakes with the front wheels on the ground.

ehhhh are you saying that the disc isnt actually held on with anything other than the 4 Wheel bolts?
If i remove the Wheel and caliper, do i just need to hit the disc with a hammer to release it ??
