My car buying skills are obviously off. I bought this off a dealer I have bought off before and he's done well by my girlfriend so i trusted him. Turns out there is some mold growing on the headliner and it has a strong smell of mold and mildew. He hid the smell with strong car cleaner but now the smell is terrible and i'm worried for my lungs.

I would take the car back but technically he is a private seller so I have no grounds to go on. I feel a bit stupid but now I have to deal with it, at least the car runs sweet :)

Any help with this is appreciated! More looking towards getting someone else to swap it out as I have no clue what i'm doing :p

He calls himself a dealer, and he has like 30 cars but he's not technically a dealer so he's a private seller. If that makes sense?

There is a definition of a motor trader that's used by the taxman. I think it's something like selling more than 6 cars a year. Was the car registered to him or was it still in the lasr owners name. I he didn't register it he's a dealer. Youdon't have to have a lot and a business card.Have you talked to him about it at all?

If he has some 30 cars he is still a business and still has an obligation. If as you say he's previously been good then it shouldn't be a problem to take it back to him, I'd assume with that many cars he would have someone who does the cleaning and he could just ask them to clean it properly and get rid of the smell and mildew.

Before you take it back though give the car a good look over for wet or damp carpets mood else were or any rust in unusual places.

Make sure the mold isn't a sign of a bigger damp problem

The mould is almost certainly a symptom of damp. It will not go away until the car is completely dry and any leak fixed. Does it have a sunroof, which is leaking, possibly into the headlining, so not obvious. Or is the interior wet, check the carpets carefully, under the rear seat, boot floor, etc. Has the car been in a flood?

If that's the case then it might be time to give him a call. I'll let you guys know how that goes thanks for your input :)

And I've thoroughly inspected all the interior and it seems to be pretty good! I'll double check in the light tomorrow on my way to work but it seems to be just the headline. I have no sunroof, my colleagues say it could be the drain on the roof leaking?
