Been getting a problem with our '66 500X and the engine management light. It's happened 4-5 times now, first was about 4-5 months ago on a short drive back from work. Happily driving along and then with no warning the engine management light comes on and the dash flashes up messages along the lines of Start/Stop being unavailable, Check Electronic Handbrake etc. No loss of power, just disco lights everywhere.

On the first occasion Fiat Roadside came out, checked the car and no problem found. Errors had cleared.

Happened a second time around 2 months back, this time on the motorway with ACC on. Again no loss of power. Fiat were less bothered, but as we were in the middle of a long journey they offered roadside. Declined as we were on a schedule. Lights went away after ?5 engine restarts.

Car then went in to dealer to be checked over. No problem found, no faults stored.

Since then it has happened another three times, identical symptoms with lights and messages but car runs fine, five to six restarts clears the lot. Any ideas?

Mines just gone in today, iffy battery caused random issues. Waiting for a new one from Italy.

How did they narrow it down to the battery causing the issues? Dealer just checked the onboard computer, found no faults and handed the car back.

I had exactly the same fault on mine. Happened a few times before they worked out what it was. Everything would be fine and then suddenly random lights on the dash. It turned out to be a canbuss error miss reading the sensors. Swapped the sensor (Im not sure exactly what the part was but can call fiat if you struggel with yours). It fixed the problem and Ive never had it since!

Just before my battery failed(dead cell) I had the same display of lights for a couple of weeks then car wouldn't start.

Had exactly the same problem with mine, twice, including once a French motorway. 1st time the problems went away after several hours and 3-4 restarts. Back in UK dealer checked it over, no faults stored.

The second time AA man arrived, started the car and tested the ECU, no faults found or stored. Have never had an explanation for it but battery and alternator are both fine. Bizarre.

Pretty much the same as twobigdogs bit of randomness the fail to start. Recovery guy suggested that even though alternator and battery charge (once he'd boosted it) looked good, his money was on a dicky battery. I discussed this with the dealer and asked them to specifically check it. No idea what test was used to confirm I'm afraid.
These new heavy duty integrated batteries are crucial bits of kit now. It's not just a case of holding a charge for sparks and starters any more.
