Hi everyone, my 2014 40k miles trekking 1.3 turbo diesel (which we all love) recently started showing the engine management light and going into limp mode. It was on off for a while but eventually did it when we could get it to the mechanic who confirmed by plugging it in it was the turbo position sensor, it has been suggested that it may be a defective sensor or even turbo, requiring partial or full replacement. Has anyone out there had any similar problems and how were they rectified? It's due to have the turbo removed and inspected in the next week or so. Any help or advice would be gratefully received.

Hm, unfortunately I have never read about a turbo issue on the 1.3 l Multijet, even not in the German 500L forum.
You might want to try Google Translate and the Italian forum (obviously there are by far the most 500L discussions there - I had a steering issue once and found useful information there).
Kind regards
Brandy

There is common issue of turbo charged diesels that can cause problems like this and the 1.3 Multijet is no stranger to it either.

Soot and engine oil blowby can bake on and jam up the turbo's wastegate (or variable vanes) and the vacuum operated actuator just hasn't the force to move it.

This causes the MAP sensor (Mass Air Pressure) to detect too much boosted air and cause the engine to trip into limp mode.
It usually happens when accelerating, boost constantly builds until there's too much and it can no longer control it by opening the wastegate/retracting the vanes, then the sudden limp mode.

The fix/test is free, it's just a matter of manually moving the arm yourself to check it's free or break it free, though it's not that easy to get at.

If it is jammed, it may require a bit of force to break if free.
Obviously you do this without the engine running!

Here's some help here, you should get the jist of what needs checking.

Thanks for the advice. It has been repaired and it was indeed the actuator. Replaced and fitted. Other owners take note - the ecu warning code for the fault states turbo position sensor and the dealer just wanted to replace the turbo in its entirety rather than further problem solve. Very pricey. Thanks everyone.
