It is air coming in from outside, it will smell of anything nearby. If you think it is something wrong with the car, you need to try to identify the smell. We like a challenge on here, but a smell is difficult to do.

Aircon can create smells, especially if used infrequently.
Oil leaks from the engine can get in too.
Or a mouse got into the heater unit and died. That'll pong, and take a lot of work to clear out. (Been there done that, many years ago, on a vet's car. "Occupational hazard" he said)

No. Vet working on farms, accepts mice may get into car.
It was a Marina estate, with a lovely wooden cabinet in the back, containing all his instruments and other stuff. Would often attend animals with the car open nearby. If you have ever seen the one-piece curved dash of a later Marina, it does come out reasonably easily, after 13 little fixings have been found up under out of sight. (Sad that I can still remember these details.)

Did an oil change happen recently? I had this issue on my first oil change. The filter change caused some oil to spill on the exhaust. Had to keep my A/C set to recirculate for a couple months.
