Hello, likely my only post as it is a hire car - I caught the mirror on a bush and it seemed to snap right off. So the mirror and casing were hanging by a wire and the stub to the door was still attached to the door.

I checked for ideas as to how to replace it online and found some advice on this forum so I am offering my experience to others. Firstly don't panic. It looks like it can't really be fixed by a non expert but it can.

Secondly it requires a bit of trial and error and close observation of the spring load mechanism in order to reattach. It took me about 30 minutes and a trip to a DIY store to get it done.

The way to do it is to take the back moulding off the mirror - it just clips off but be gentle.
Then align the mirror at it looks like it should fit - you will notice a felt outline on the part attached to the door - that is a good guide.

You will need a pliers or a secatuers or similar to push into the hole in the circle where the lead come through. The idea here is to push down as hard as you can and twist so that the mirror casing can lock in with the handle attached to the door. You might need a good pair of gloves along with a strong set of hands. It is really a case of pushing down harder that you might wish and at the same time twisting. It took me about 30 attempts to get the lock but lock in place it did.

Worth trying but don't scrape the car. It worked for me and it can work for anyone I guess - was really pleased as I am sure it would have been a €350 fix otherwise.

Hope this helps some of you 500 L drivers.:)

You sir just saved my marriage, thank you!

How did you figure it out? I would have never thought of that fix.

I will confirm that lots of pressure is needed. I had to stand on a ladder and lean all my body weight over it.

And have to say, it worked, but I honestly don't know why. It's a ver opaque mechanism.

Thanks again!!!!

That is one incredible tip peter - my passenger side wing mirror got knocked off - I was going to contact my insurance company to see about getting it repaired - saw your tip, decided to give it a go - within two minutes of the wing mirror housing being taken off I had the wing mirror snapped back in to place and locked.

What really makes tip so great is your bang on the money description of what to expect whilst attempting the repair.

Thank you for sharing it, it worked beyond belief for me.

I have to say thank you also. My wife had a slow impact which it looked as though it had sheared. As you have pointed out it must be a design feature such as my ducati mirrors. A slight knock will only need the clip put back in.

Thanks again for sharing

My Punto one was held on with tape when I bought it.

Got annoyed of staring at the tape..

So unravelled it.. and saw how it SHOULD .. go back together.

The cast parts on mine were broken.. but forced it back together anyway..
it has still held perfectly for 8 months.

Amazed how it never wobbled with just tape.. these mirrors are pretty heavy..

Hi,
happened to me today too :((((((((((
Does this look like it can be fixed the way you described ? From your description, you did not remove the mirror from the car as I did, right ?
So the trick is to simply press the parts together as hard as possible?
Many thanks
Brandy

Brandy, yes i did get mine together. It is more of a push and twist together. It is very hard to do so might be easier on the car or if you can hold it in some way. Hope thats clear that the two have separated but can be put back together by pushing one into the other, making sure the locate pin pushes in and twists to lock.

Thats good news Brandy..!! :)

My repair has now lated almost 2 years..and @20k miles

It even get a knock the other day.. mirror pivoted out of position..

But it rotated back..as designed.. without issue :)

As stated in thread title the mirror appears to be same as 500 and all punto from 2007

So if you ever need a whole one..
Grande parts are now cheap and plentiful ;)

Hi, same issues with fiat 500l mirror, was kicked off in the weekend by vandals and neighbors too.

It's hanging of from the socket joint as in the picture above, where the person said they've able to press it in and reconnected. I'm struggling with this. You mentioned line it up with the pin location etc. Can you help further thanks.

Hi

The GUIDES show how to reassemble the 500 hatchbacks mirror

Thanks, I'll keep trying, I'm a bit afraid of applying too much pressure on down the mirror.

Sorted thanks to all posts folks. Taken the back mould cap off the mirror, to get at the centre joint. Applied pressure down the centre with pliers, pressure down hard and twisted clockwise, clip in and working. A chair to stand up on is must to get down pressure.

I'll put up some pictures, thanks all.

registered to say thanks to the OP for the info, as we had exactly the same issue on our 500 ...caused by wife pulling in the wing mirror to avoid hitting it our other car (our drive is a tight squeeze) & it just popped off

i would add that it is possible to do it removed from the car (we took ours off completely so wife could still use the car) & seems a bit easier than the above methods with it attached to the car (& possibly safer) - line up the mirror housing & plastic part that attaches to the car, place the pliers as above inside the metal tube (spring side) making sure the metal tabs at the other end of the tube line up with the gaps in the plastic housing, spin the whole lot upside down & place on the floor (so plier handles are now on the floor) use a cloth to hold the part of the mirror housing normally attached to the car (as you're going to press down very hard & the plastic edge is sharper than it looks) then push down with all your weight on it & twist slightly when you see the metal tabs are visibly above the gaps in the housing- this should now be enough to hold the 2 parts of the mirror together (it was easier to do this on the kitchen door mat as the plier handles dig in slightly). Dont worry if the tabs look like they are only holding on by a tiny amount ...get some mole grips & grab the tube lip at the spring end (there are two cut outs on it- presumably where the tool at the factory fits in) & grip the mirror base housing firmly & just twist the mole grips- a couple of twists in the right direction & the metal tabs now sit well over the plastic housing ring

it took just 3 attempts to do it this way ...& didn't involve standing on a chair outside in the cold :)

I know this an old thread, but I had the very same problem with my partners 500. I looked at the above, read how much force was required and knowing how things can go sideways very quickly I tackled it slightly differently.

I removed the mirror from the car, I slid the spring down off the cylinder as far as it could go.

Using a pair of grips I compressed the spring as far as it would go and used cable ties to keep it compressed. I slid the spring back over the cylinder and pushed it back through the base.

It was almost there but not enough. The clips on the ties were to thick to allow the cylinder to go any further. I needed something smaller. I tried using smaller cable ties but they weren't man enough.

I had in the summer run some armoured power cable, I had a piece left over and removed one if the thin steel braids.

So again I compressed the spring, using big cable ties I compressed it as far as it would go, then used the this steel braid to loop around the spring twisting the ends off.

When I cut the ties the spring remained compressed and I was able to get the cylinder all the way home and lock in place buy hand. I then cut the braid and removed it.

It was a bit of faffing, but the thought of slipping off doing it in place and scratching the car, or buckling what is a thin door skin wasnt for me!!

Got to say it is a pants design, I would have expected to see at least a circlip or metal washer for the cylinder to lock into, not straight plastic. Its a wonder then just don't fly off!!

Anyway hope this helps...
