Hi,

We're looking for a new (second hand) car, and the current favourite is the 500L (or the MPW), probably 2013-14. We're just not sure what it's like on the motorway. Is it a "solid" ride at high speeds (70-80mph), and is it noisy (engine, wind, road)?
We currently have a 13 year old 1.6 Ford Fusion, and I expect it will be much better than that anyway, but how does it compare with other contemporary cars? It's pretty important to us that the new car is comfortable, feels solid and is relatively quiet on long motorway journeys.
Please indicate which engine you have in your reply.
Thanks!!

I find the car comfortable on long journeys, yes there is some wind noise but then as with most cars this is the norm. It holds it speed fairly well although on steepish hills it tends to struggle a bit but I guess depending on the engine it might differ, lets face it it's not the most aero dynamic thing out there. I have a 1.4 and it handles well and does what I need it to do.

Hope this is of some use

Just returned from a 400 mile round trip using M6/M1/A1M :the car is comfortable inside but struggles a bit on hills so I think the 1.4 might disappoint
I would not say that is too noisy though

Thanks both! Very helpful. Do either of you have the glass roof? I've read that it makes it more noisy, but not sure to what degree.

Yes we have the glass roof but have no idea if it more noisy.
The glass roof was a "must have " for us for the light and the view

And do things tend to go wrong a lot with the 500L?

I have the 1.3 diesel automatic 85 bhp it's great on the motorway, nice and steady, holds it speed (using cruise control) very well. Good mpg too..

We have the 1.6 diesel (105 , not the later 120) and that just eats motorways. We have the glass roof too and don't really notice any additional noise because of this. The 105 bhp has tonnes of torque (320NM peak) which makes it great fit this kind of driving. Leave it in 6th and it's not touching 2000rpm at legal speeds so it's got long legs and plenty of grunt to pull up inclines without changing down. The newer 120bhp 1.6s have more horsepower but I note the quoted torque is considerably lower (I think it's 256NM peak). Anyone driven both?

I am owning a 0,9 twin air, nice driving , quiet like any other equivalent/competitor car. Even with panoramaroof

We've had a Fiat 500 L Beats edition for 6 months now. 1.6D, runs very well on Motorways, the raised seats works well, very comfy. Average mpg about 50.
Luv the car, I've driven the 1.3 before so the cost for a 2nd 1.6 made sense.:)
