Hi there

about 6 weeks ago the temp gauge on our 500L MPW twin air started to act up. The gauge takes a long time to register any movement - several miles - and it never reaches full temperature, where the needle sits in the middle. The needle sits on the cold side of normal.

I took it to my garage last Friday and they hooked it up to the diagnostics but saw nothing. They cleaned some electrical contacts and "logged it with Italy" - whatever that means.

Since Friday it's worse. The gauge barely moves now.

Has anyone seen this before and if so what is the remedy. The car is under warranty so I'm happy it'll be sorted.

That's what I think. But the garage said it all checks out fine. I don't believe that though. I'll call them this week to follow up. We did a 250km drive today on very mixed roads in high winds and heavy rain - it' summer in Ireland after all! - and we averaged 46mpg. The car only got warm internally when I set the temp to 25C and the gauge never got up to operating temperature. Sounds like a faulty thermostat

With the engine cold, so stood all night, or all day, open bonnet, start it up and feel the top hose as it warms up. Hose should stay cold for a few minutes, then suddenly get warm as the stat opens. Feel it near the radiator, not at the engine, to get a true reading. If it gets warm gradually from the start, stat is stuck open. Simple diagnosis. Won't show on a computer.

I'll try that and keep the post updated. It makes sense what you said. I had stat trouble on 3 cars in the past and cheap fixes with new stats. Under warranty I won't have to pay!
