I have been driving my new 500L 1.6 diesel for a few weeks now and have to say I’m loving it. But there is one thing that puzzles me.

Quite often (though not all the time), when driving along on a flat road I notice that the car will just saunter along at a steady 20 or 30 without me touching the accelerator. It’s like I was in cruise control, tho’ I’m not. I 'regain manual control' by going down a gear or pressing the brake.

The garage I bought it from tells me that it’s a very ‘torque-y’ engine and this is normal. But I’ve never had a car before that does this. Does anyone here have a similar experience?

Thanks.

Hi, i would guess that, due to the long gearing of the diesel version, if you are in top gear when this happens, you will probably be almost down to the idle speed of the car?

So it will chug along at a set speed on the flat and even probably uphill.

Are you in top gear when this happens?

I have a petrol version but mine will only do it if either in 1st or 2nd gear, only noticed this because of being in traffic but then I did have a similar thing on my old VW Sharan, not sure if that did ever do it in third but it was deffo 1st and 2nd again

It'll do it any gear, in any car. With the clutch pressed and the car stopped, put the car into gear (any gear) and slowly lift the clutch without pressing any other pedals. As long as the handbrake is off, the car will start rolling forward and will reach a speed determined by the engine's natural idle speed and the gear you're in.
