Is there any way that the annoying "shift" display symbol on the instrument panel , telling you to change gear can be disabled or switched off?

It shows up too often on my 500L Easy 1.6 multijet diesel 6 speed and is as distracting as it it is annoying.
If you drive the car obeying the "shift" light you would do nothing else other than change gear all day to the detriment of fuel economy and smooth driving.

Any ideas please?

Nope, it's required by law (an EU directive applying to all new vehicles from 2012).
I tend to do as the lights say, and often it doesn't actually get around to telling me to shift, because I've already changed gear.
It's there to help emissions (independent tests have shown a 5-10% reduction in fuel consumption when vehicles are fitted with the shift lights).

I find it quite useful. If it shows up too often it means you are not shifting up enough :)

If it bothers you why not just ignore it?

Where would we be without EU regulations :) next thing they might want to drive the car for us.

In reality though, it does provide a somewhat useful reminder that you aren't being efficient, although like milesperhour states, it's not that obtrusive and I tend to shift before or as it shows anyway.
