DLR. Not an essential safety feature, as your little smiley face gave away, I think. (y)

No use whatsoever unless you are the sort that don't put your lights on in the rain or at dusk. I've always seen other cars in the day time, whether they were a Volvo or not.........

I just hate things that are unecessary and out of my control. Yep, as someone said they are the sidelights too.

It ain't the end of the world, it just cheeses me off and is an inconvenience and a safety hazard in my line of work. :D

I actually think they are an important safety addition (essential was perhaps too strong).

I find it easier to spot a car that has them on in certain conditions, particularly when it"s a bland colour, like silver/Grey, Jan does too. Not a scientific study agreed.

I appreciate some drivers claim they make no difference but one thing they don't do is make a car less visible. :)

Agreed, traveling into and out of forestation is prime example, you'll be able to see a car coming towards you that may be in the forestation a lot better when it has DRLs / dipped beam headlights on, if you're still outside of the forestation and its a sunny day.

Likewise when you're driving towards a setting sun, those coming towards you with DRLs are a lot more visible that those without.

I will most certainly agree that they don't make a car less visible and they are more of an advantage than a disadvantage. But I do still believe that legislation to insist on them is a bit silly.

It's a bit like passing a law saying that as soon as it starts to rain, your wipers must automatically start up in case the driver forgets to turn them on.

I dislike having things removed from my control, that's all. As I say, I'm perfectly capable of turning my lights, wipers, heater, radio and 12v microwave on, when it is necessary. :D:p(y)

But, and being devil's advocate for a second the analogy with wipers doesn't work simply because if it starts to rain you invariably can't see where you are going so you have to switch them on...you just wouldn't forget.

Personally if permanently on DRL's means it helps me see someone coming towards me at a junction when I might have missed them if they had forgotten to switch their lights on when it's raining then I am all for them.

Yes they are possibly overkill for the driver who will never forget but can we all honestly say we haven't occasionally forgotten to flick the lights on when visibility is poor, I know I can't.

True. But if it were pitch dark with out street lamps, you'd have to as well. I'm now playing the devil's avocado..... :D:D

But again, it would be as obvious because you could not see your way.

DRL's are not about you seeing your way but about others seeing you.....:)

Mmmm. I think that was my point, but to be honest I can't remember now! :p

:) I think we shall have to agree to disagree on this one. I believe they are virtually pointless and the epitomy of a European nanny state. Others believe they are a useful safety feature. And that is the joy of FiatForum. We can all have our say. That's why I'm here. :)

Incidentally, if one adds lime cordial and lemonade to the devil's advocaat, does one get the devil's snowball? :D:D:D
