MY new 2014 500L with auto transmission barely has 1500 miles on it and i was in the traffic. all of sudden i smell something like rubber burning. i looked around other cars and actually it was coming out of my car. smoke and smell was so bad i thought the car was about to blow up. anyways i took it to my local dealer in bloomfield hills michigan. i just wanna know if anyone is having the same problem. this really sucks and i never had this kind of problem when my new car has only 1500 miles on it...

Whoops! Sounds like the transmission to me, but this is only a guess.

Sorry to hear about your problem, please keep us informed.

And message to car makers: bring back torque converters!

I know. But with a big engine in a light car they can be totally reliable over huge mileages, and not too thirsty. Which is rather economical over time.

All a bit academic for me I'm afraid, since I don't like small automatics. How long do these dual clutch manumatics last anyway? But I do like economy, so I'll stick with a manual for the time being.

I'm looking for a manual with a fine powertrain and nifty performance with great real time economy.

I may have found one

We have a Fiat 500L with about 8000 miles on it and had an identical problem. It was about 55deg F outside (so it was not a hot day), in some really bad stop and go traffic and we started smelling something foul. I would not have called it burning rubber, but maybe that's what it was. It was a very strong, nasty smell. After about 5 min of the smell getting worse, we noticed that smoke was coming out of our hood. We pulled over and turned off the car.

We had it towed to a Fiat dealership who told us that nothing was wrong with the car and that a recall for this problem had just been distributed. ???

I want to know what caused it and will it happen again? If nothing was really wrong with the car, what should we have done? Continue to drive it with smoke billowing out of the hood?

Any other feedback or response would be appreciated.

What automatic gearbox is fitted to your car? Is it the Dualogic gearbox?

Panda,

If the dualogic system is the transmission where I can go manual (w/out the clutch) or automatic, then I have the dualogic.

Sounds like the clutch is slipping causing the burning smell and smoke then, and this isn't normal. When in traffic or sitting on a hill you're not resting your foot on the gas are you

No I am not resting my foot on the accelerator; and I am not talking about a little bit of smoke or steam. I am talking about a significant amount of smoke and an awful smell that has to be toxic. It smelled like rotten garbage first, then burning rotten garbage. Much worse of a smell than I have smelled with burning rubber before. This was bad enough that we pulled off of the road, shut off the engine without restarting it and called for a tow. We waited for 3 hours for the tow and never restarted the engine. I thouhgt for sure that something was about to seize.

A slipping clutch will smell awful and smoke also. What colour was the smoke?

Not that we want it to reappear, but if it does a video would work wonders.

Exactly the same issue happened to us yesterday. In stop and go traffic but only for about 5 minutes. Smell of garbage, then burning garbage. Thought black smoke was coming from car in front - our Fiat 500L is new with less than 2000 km on it. Cyclist pointed out it was ours. Pulled off road right away and popped hood. Took 20 minutes for smoke to clear. Had car towed to dealer and was told it was likely a " breaking in" problem! I don't think so. No car needs to practically catch fire while breaking in. Anyway, at dealership today. Wondering if this has to do with the recall issue for transmission. Whatever it is - it is NOT normal and potentially very dangerous.

I have 2100 miles on my Fiat 500L - was at the in-n-out burger drive thru - when I started smelling fumes - thinking it was the car in front of me at the pick up window - I rowed up my window - then I started seeing lot of smoke coming from my engine - I jumped out of the car - phoned AAA and had car hauled to dealership - car is at dealership waiting outcome.
