Seriously.... What halfwit thought that appealing to mumsnet idiots in such a cringeworthy manner would sell cars?

It just shows who they're targeting... -- and I bet that particular audience will love it (both the car, and the vid...). Just you wait until loads of yummy mummies turn up in a fleet of these, and park outside your nearest Starbucks... (if they haven't gone bust, by then...).

:D

The American ads for the car are cheesy but at least a bit upbeat, this one seems to say 'have a miserable stressy life, have a Fiat...'

But the posts at the bottom seemed to think it was clever so what do I know.

It's there to appeal to the Mumsnet crowd, the problem with mumsnet is that most of the women probably don't have the money to buy one of these.

went to see it today in Guildford

its big, really big and tall, and really expensive
it looks ok in the metal

good seats and legroom

its got baby wagon written all over it, like something fisher price would endorse

Ulpian is right about gear lever being too low, also rear headroom being low at edge due to glass roof

Dualogic will only be offered with 1.3 diesel and not available till Summer

will see what my Mother thinks when she sees it next week

that is actually very good (y)
I know it's not like me to disagree, but the advert below is a fantastic advert

The one that Elation linked to is cringeworthy. Whilst the 500 is not for everyone, I doubt anyone watched the original 2008 ad for the 500 and thought "God, that's made me NEVER want to even think about looking at that car"

I doubt that, to be honest (although, admittedly it might not be their own money...). See here, for example.... My experience of them (and it almost feels like a cult, sometimes...) is that the site's members are all supported by their investment banker husbands; and spend their days blocking aisles in Waitrose and Starbucks with their double buggies, whilst shrieking over each other.... :p

However, much more likely -- especially around here -- to be driving a white Range Rover Evoque, than a paltry FIAT; whilst simultaneously admiring their (dyed) blonde hair in the rearview mirror, and trying to push me off the road....

The car is meant for a family, possibly a Mum with young kids, and the ad (or rather the rap) is full of things that young Mums would relate to. I actually think they should air the thing in full between Corrie or something. It's much better than the usual non-discript, run of the mill ads that Fiat has produced lately.

Some people will hate it, but others will love it, just like the 500L itself. It's better to divide opinion and get sales rather than the whole population thinking 'meh, it's ok', forgetting about it and going to buy something else - Bravo & recent Punto ads, anyone?

We've not had decent UK ads since the 'Don't You Want Me Baby' Mk2 Punto advert so i think it's a revelation. Sadly i suspect it'll stay as an online only ad because Fiat will be too scared to 'do' daring on national telly.

Yep, got to say it's an advert that will get people talking, that's for sure! I found it pretty funny to be honest, sad as that makes me...

At the end of the day, the 500L has been created to attract customers who are (generally speaking) well off, there's no two ways about that. But having said that, if you compare the 500L with some of its competitors, the entry level 1.4 Pop Star isn't too badly priced at all at just shy of £15k. Will certainly be interesting to see the quality of finance offers available, that could well be the deciding factor IMO.

Going back to the new Panda, it's made me realise just how utterly abject the advertising was. I mean, come on! A few ads in between Corrie, and that was that. Not really fitting for a car which has sold so many units for Fiat.

A white Panda has been crawling around Coronation Street for a few months now; very bad advertising for the satnav since the poor buggers seem to be totally lost.

And I do like funny car ads, but ones that are just a bit aspirational perhaps. A harrassed mother with a pair of toxic children leaning out of the window of some strange car in front of a suburban house is hardly going to get the pulse racing, even though the clarity of the situation does bring a smile. We know that children are not the perpetual joy that the yummy-mummy brigade like to sell, but even so, there might be a few childfree people whose lives are actually enjoyable who might also find the 500L useful?

Still, a salesman told me recently that 95% of 500s sell to women, and as far as he was concerned that was that! The word 'ambiance' rears its head ;)

I think Fiat now needs a new Coupe to appeal to the stereotypical male: perhaps harrassed- depressed- mother's husband could zoom off to his mistress in it while she's rapping...?

:yeahthat:

......also suspect Fiat are too cheap to pay for a decent tv ad campaign in UK.

I wonder how the 500L is being received in Italy?

In November they sold 2115 500L's. From launch in August, they sold 3909 cars. I would be verry intrested in 4x4 version. Panda is too litle for me, but 500L or XL would be just perfect. And if they put 1.6mjt (y)(y)

It will, of course, look like the Monty Python foot has trodden on a standard 500; and be called the 500P (or even the 500MLC...).

I just looked at the rappy ad again, somewhere else, and I think I'm going to have to retract my initial sense of horror: I quite liked it

The words really are brilliant.

I hope to god this car works. Forget the glass roof if you aren't circus people, and please Fiat, when you change the pedals over make sure there is enough room in the pedal box. The LHD car has masses of space for drivers' feet, at the expense of space on the other side - which doesn't matter unless they try to cram three pedals and a clutch foot rest in the RHD pedal space as it exists now - because there isn't room! This will need some remodelling of the plastic linings of the pedal box, or even more work because the placement of some controls, like the A/C, is biased towards the passenger side to allow space for the driver. Even the Panda has more space on the right hand side of the car than the L and the Panda has only just enough space for a clutch rest.

If Fiat cramps the driver's clutch foot up like it did in the Brava and the Giulietta I predict this car will flop here. Road testers rarely comment on important ergonomic issues like this, but punters notice them and I can't think of one car with awful pedal placement that has been successful recently.
