When driving with headlamps on in daylight, the dashboard illumination (ie what makes the needles glow) goes on and off. It has never gone out when driving in low light or dark conditions; does the dashboard illumination have a light sensor and if so, where is it?
I have also noted the RH side of the heater panel has intermittent lighting fault, but I don't recall this coinciding with the dashboard.

The Hester controls have 3 I think small bulbs. If one is in the way out it may be intermittent. You need to take the panel off and replace the offending one.
