Posting on behalf of my husband. What diagnostic tools if any do you use? He's used to looking after our cars and is looking at getting some Fiat kit. Does anybody use Multiecuscan? And if so how is it. Do you need all the coloured cables with the 500 or just the elm 327 and is it better than a generic code scanner?
Thanks

I think you'll find a fair few of us use MES (MultiEcuScan) on our Fiats. I'f you goto to the MES website and look on the compatible vehicles list it will tell you which cables you will need for which part of your car's ecu:

http://www.multiecuscan.net/SupportedVehiclesList.aspx

You'll also see a table to the right which tells you what each means i.e. ELM12 = ELM327 cable + Adaptor Cable 1.

You could buy the Multiplex kit which does away with the adaptor cables but at a much higher price. Look at https://www.gendan.co.uk/ which is one of the official MES suppliers in the UK.

I use the Multiecuscan software
It is an easy to handle tool
On our 500 I did service resets en read out problems with the dualogic.
Also I did programming key's for a Panda.
For home use the registered version (€50,-) is enough
I have the ELM 327 tool and the red, green and yellow OBD plug

Hi,
I've used Multiecuscan for a number of years and highly recommend it. It's more capable and easier to use than much more expensive software I've used for other makes in the past.
For the 500 you just need the ELM 327 and the Yellow (no.3) adaptor lead.
I've bought the full set referenced earlier and it and the seller are OK. The price is not a lot higher than just the ELM 327 and yellow adaptor alone. e.g.

and

I've bought from these sellers too.
Note you need a laptop to run Multiecuscan, but anything running Windows XP (SP2) or later will work fine.
You could also consider AlfaOBD www.alfaobd.com But my prefernce is Multiecuscan.

Thanks for the reply and the links. I've just shown it to my husband as he still can't log on under his user name. He's looked at the Alfa obd and seen it can do keys, can the multiecuscan do that too? He has access to examiner from his old Fiat days but obviously our 500 is a lot newer so the engine ecu isn't recognised.
Thanks again

Why not down load multiecuscan , its free,
Run MES on your computer, selected your Fiat 500 model, then clic simulate, you can then see what it does?

What diagnostic tool does official services use?

As example for cars with SGW module.

Forgive me if I'm wide of the mark here but, reading between the lines I'm guessing your hubby is a knowledgeable enthusiast rather than a professional mechanic?

If this is the case then you need to ask yourself if you have the knowledge and experience to take advantage of a "professional" grade package?

I am a retired mechanic who did not specialise in diagnostics. General service work. MOT rectification. Clutches. etc. etc. were my thing. So maybe in a roughly similar position to many "serious" enthusiasts now I no longer have access to the workshop.

About 5/6 years ago I bought VAG-COM (now VCDS) as I was, and still am, very involved with Volkswagen group stuff (mostly SEATs and Skodas) This is a virtually dealer level tool - I use it mostly during services and I can work about half of what it can do! Still learning almost every time I use it! Our family has traditionally also run Fiats so, as we now have a couple of newer ones in the "fleet", I decided to buy Multiecuscan (MES) mainly because there was so much info on how to use it on both the forum and on you tube. I bought from Gendan, whom I absolutely bombarded with questions before I bought. They were very patient and helpful. Because I was used to just plugging in the one interface with VAG-COM I decided to go for the more expensive Multiplexed option with MES. It is quite a lot more expensive but I have not regretted it. For instance, one of the first things I do if servicing a family vehicle or, maybe fault finding for a friend or neighbour, is to do a whole vehicle scan. This takes just minutes with the multiplexed cable. The other thing I like about MES is that it "leads you by the nose". There are embedded instructions and fault code definitions which are very helpful. Down load the free version from the MES site, as suggested by jackwhoo, and run it in simulation mode to see what I mean.

There is no point in buying a system which you have neither the knowledge or experience to use. I'm verging on that with some aspects of my VAG-COM!

Having said all that though, I do enjoy the "finding out" and get enormous satisfaction when I've done something that turns out successfully - and realise I fully understand the process!

Hi,
The official tool is "Examiner". There is not much information on the security measures on the latest cars or if MES will ever be able to get around them. I've seen reports that even the dealers have to be online with the factory to access some functions.

2018 MODELS WARNING: Some 2018 vehicles have a "security gateway" module (SGW). The SGW module blocks any diagnostic tool from executing commands on the vehicle (like actuators, procedures and even clearing of DTCs). It is not possible to unlock the SGW module with Multiecuscan. The only diagnostic tool that can unlock full access to the affected vehicles is the factory tool. Another option is to physically connect the diagnostic tool to CAN lines behind SGW module.
The 2018 models with confirmed presence of SGW are: 500X/Renegade, 500L MCA, Doblo, Giulia/Stelvio. The module is also present in some late 2017 vehicles.
You can rund the SCAN function (which is also available in the FREE version of Multiecuscan) to check if your vehicle has SGW module.
