I finally got some Silicone Spray for my car and sprayed it all over the suspension top mounts. So far it sounds better, so will keep things as they are for now.
 
Its the metal bit inside the rubber bit, which in turn is supported by the outer metal bit that fails.

My nearside front makes a noise over speed humps or pot holes, given I've replaced all the front suspension bar these two in the picture I suspect the swivel bearing.
Do I replace just the bearing that "must be removable from the spring cup?" or bearing and rubber mount or new rubber mount that now appears to have a integrated bearing? Prices vary from just £8 for the bearing to £25 for the newer type integrated Lemforder type or similar Sachs brand @£30
