I dont know if its been mentioned before here but is there any way to open the trunk without having to turn the car off and clicking the button on the key?

If the boot lid mounted button does not work, no, the switch maybe faulty(often mentioned) or the hatch wiring that transmits the signal to open is broken.
Pull off the silver part and see if the switch is working correctly, there's only 3 wires, contact cleaner may work(not WD40) I have to bang on the top of the silver bit first then ours works every time, though I have had it apart.

Okay so I think the button itself is not working.. The 3 wires are in place

Any idea on how to fix this?

The quick fix is rto replace the whole sliver part at quite some cost, or remove it and dismantle it to get to the switch(to replace?) I tried and found I could not get it fully apart but in the process the switch started working (tested with meter) and has worked ever since sometimes requiring the bang on the top of the silver part to tap it back into life.
