I just picked up a full size alloy wheel and tyre to match the ones on the car as I do not like not having a spare and do not trust Tyreweld-alike to get me anywhere with any sort of bad puncture.

I just noticed that the space saver spare, when provided, is stowed outside under the car and has to be lowered by turning a nut inside the boot. My question is, will I be able to stow a full size wheel like this? And as I do not have the spare as standard, will the bracket still be in there or will I have to go and buy one somehow?

I don't have the car with me at the moment or I'd go and look about the latter.

Thanks all.

Are you sure it's stored underneath the car? Maybe it's a new design on the later model but my space saver is in the boot

Back with the car and I stand completely corrected. I do have a space saver already and it is inside the car. My online owners manual is clearly for another country as is that YouTube video. I was not expecting that!

Both the spelling and the accent give the game away.

I'd strongly suggest you delete that online manual now, before you get seriously misled by something else. North American 500's are significantly different.

I only downloaded it as I noticed from the configurator that Lounges now come with cruise control as standard and ours from last March doesn't but I wanted to check where the controls were.

You live and learn.

Best way to get the online handbook, is to download it from Fiat.

Put in your VIN into the box. It didn't work for me with the registration number.
Solve the capatch, and you're in.

You can select the different handbooks to download specifically for your vehicle.

Good luck,
Mick.

Thanks I've done that now - the VIN number to get a copy of the manual - a bit overprotective.

A space saver must also be cheaper than a 5th alloy, although in a small car like the 500 I'd agree that the primary aim is to make the most of the limited boot space.
My alloys are even less likely to fit as I went for the 16 in. option with 195/45 tyres.

I can categorically confirm that it will not fit in the spare wheel well. Even with seats folded down it does not go in. Nowhere near.

I'll keep it at home as a spare.

I bought a 5th alloy 16" and it does fit, although a tight fit, it is taller than the space saver so intrudes more into the boot space.

Mine does not - I'm not talking about it sticking up higher than the space saver, I am talking that no matter what angle or from what direction you try to lower it in, it either hits the boot lip or the back of the bottom of the seat back before it is anywhere near far enough in. The space saver goes in diagonally downwards and then once one end is all the way in, the rest drops down onto the space.

Because the alloy wheel is almost twice as wide (deep) and is going in at 45°, the leading edge never gets far enough in for the trailing edge to clear the boot lip or seat bottom. It wasn't even close.

This is very confusing. Either it fits or it does not. Who is right then?
