Technical 2016 Lounge - full size spare wheel

You have to move the seats forward to get it in, its tight but definitely goes in to the spare wheel well.

This is very confusing. Either it fits or it does not. Who is right then?

Well in fairness to both posters, it might depend on the tyre fitment.

Regardless, any full size wheel is going to seriously intrude into the boot space (and there's not that much of it to start with).

IMO it's not worth carrying a full size spare, but I'd never go out without a space saver. That'll keep you going if you get a puncture and you generally won't be that far away from somewhere that can either repair or replace the full size tyre. A spacesaver may look horrendous, but if you respect the limits, it's perfectly safe to use until you can get a proper repair.

Looking back over a lifetime's motoring, I'd say I've needed a spare wheel about once in every 100,000 miles. In almost every case, I've needed to use it in the most challenging, adverse conditions, but I've never yet been left stranded by a puncture. I doubt any (save perhaps one) of the failures I've experienced could have been salvaged with a can of squirty goo.

If you use the car a lot might be worth having a full size spare as well as a space saver, but the place to keep it is in the garage, not the car. It gives you the flexibility to fix the damaged tyre on your terms, not those of the nearest garage.

I'll take a picture tomorrow to demonstrate. At least now I have the spare I would only need to have the spacesaver on until I get home. Touch wood it will never be required.

The spacesaver will get you home just fine.

I'd suggest you think ahead about how you are going to carry the (removed) full size wheel once you've changed it; I'd recommend you keep a sturdy waterproof plastic sack of suitable dimensions in the boot.

The better prepared you are, the less likely it will be that you'll need it ;).

Does it? The speed limit really worries me. With the spacesaver you are a moving chicane on the motorway. Even most trucks drive faster. Fortunately I didn't have to experience it yet.

One important thing is to check and blow up the space saver spare at least every 6 months
You are right. It's a job I postpone too often...

According to the owner handbook you should check it more often:
Check the pressure of each tyre, including the space-saver wheel, approximately every two weeks and before long journeys
In my opinion, something that should be checked that often, should be more easily accessible.

I reckon you're correct on the distance involved. Punctures are rare things indeed.

Have you ever had two at once?
I have.

Luckily, the car was parked for a while, and going back to the car, I found two flats. I fitted the spare to one and got one repaired. Then fitted it to the other, and got the second one repaired. I say "luckily" because I found them when not driving.

Regards,
Mick.

I haven't forgotten but the Mrs was out in the car both Sat and Sun during daylight hours! Watch this space...

Well I do have a puncture as it turns out although a slow one - there is a screw stuck right in. So I changed the wheel for the one I bought and here are the pictures proving that the wheel I took off the car does not fit in the spare bay in the boot.

Here I tried putting it in seat end and rear lip end and it was nowhere near getting in.

You can see the screw stuck in the wheel in this one - the part nearest the camera. Hopefully repairable as it's within the main tread area.

And again there's no way on earth that wheel will go into the spacesaver space.

Damn, £75 each for the standard Continental Eco tyre. The wheel with tyre and trim I bought for £60 off eBay has paid off already as it is now on the car.

If it were me I'd be chucking that tyre out. Don't think that's anywhere near being a safe repair.
