Technical Help, new to site, egr issue

Well the plot thickens, had the egr replaced and dpf reading okay

New issue, wouldn't start today, they came out and used starter pack to start car, went for a drive to charge the battery and all lights on my dash came on, power steering failed and headlights would not work! Car also will not look using remote and is now parked outside my house unable to start ??

Did you pay any of the purchase price of the car on a credit card? If you did, you could try for a refund via your credit card company if this all turns really sour and the vehicle turns out that it isn't fit for purpose. And on that note, if you have one, I absolutely advise anyone buying a car from a garage, whether franchised or independent, to pay either the deposit or the balance on a credit card as doing so gives you as the consumer a great deal more protection under the Consumer Credit Act 1974.

I'm wondering now, did the car come with any service history? Do you know whether the vehicle has had any MOT advisories?

https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history

How many former keepers has the car had? (you'll find that on the log book if you have it)

Checking these things can give a little bit of an idea of how well (or not) the vehicle has been looked after.

Not sure on how many keepers log book has been sent off, it has full service history the last MOT failed on tyres and breaks.

As it happens I did pay the initial deposit on my credit card so hopefully worst case will have to go down that route.

Worth looking at the DVLA site to look at the car's MOT history. You can even print it off.

Really pleased to read you've used a credit card to fund the purchase.

If the garage don't sort this to your satisfaction or argue the toss and the car doesn't turn out to be fit for purpose, then I think you know what to do. (y)

All of that could be caused by something as simple as a poor earth connection to the battery - something they may well have disturbed when they replaced the DPF; alternatively, the battery may need replacement.

That said, after your recent experiences, I'd say you'd be within your rights now to say you'd completely lost confidence in the car, and reject it. Taking delivery of a car, even a used one, should be a pleasure, not an ordeal.

That's exactly how I feel, I've only had the car since Tuesday! I fell in love with it and now no longer love it ?

I'm not very good with confrontation so not looking forward to taking it there tomorrow, once it's been jump started! ??

Did you buy the vehicle locally, from an independent garage? Does the garage you bought the vehicle from generally have a good reputation? If they do and have good reviews, they may well go out of their way to put things right quickly.

Do you mind revealing how much you paid for the car? Perfectly understand if you don't wish to divulge.

My advise would be to tell the garage you want the car booking in with a local fiat specialist rather than them looking at it and keep getting it wrong. I'm a fiat specialist myself and would have no problems fixing any 500 with issues. Especially the 1.3 multijet

The dealer is local and had several good reviews and one negative, not even sure I want things putting right now a bit fed up

I paid £4000 for her

Thanks for your response, do the issues sound like they could be caused by a low battery? Seriously ready to hand her back at the moment.

There is a chance it could be battery related but there are a number of other things that could cause those symptoms. Where in the country are you from? I wouldn't be too put off the car by the problems you've had tho. As long as you get someone that knows what they are doing with it to get the problems sorted

Are you anywhere near these guys who are Fiat and Alfa specialists:

http://www.alphayapps.co.uk/

As deano mentioned earlier, if the garage you bought the car from are amenable to the idea, politely ask them to stop mucking about and get it the car to a Fiat specialist or Fiat dealer. Trouble is, they may not want to because it will cost them money to put the car right. What ever you do, please don't lose heart and get them to sort the issue out or ask for a refund.

Get them to bring out a new battery, if it's just the battery all the warning lights will go out as they should and all will be good. If they don't go out then there are other issues

Just been out with a volt checker, battery is reading over 12.5v?

I would at least try jump starting it before anything else

The guy from the garage did that earlier when we called him, I took the car for a twenty minute drive and things just started failing, managed to get it home where it's still dead, will have to jump it in the morning to get it to the garage

They may have disconnected one or more of the cables to the alternator when fitting the egr valve so it could be that it's not charging because when disconnected they don't always have the battery light on. Jump start it tomorrow and check the battery volts then. Should be 13-14 ish volts when running. By the sound of it my money is they have left a cable off or at least loose

Okay, thank you very much, will check again once jump started in the morning and let you know
Thanks again ?

Ohhh ?
When that happened to my bravo.
(Dash lights all flashing and couldn't start)
The alternator was fooked and it cost me over £700 to replace.
If you can.

Give it back and walk away :-(

Oh crikey, I'll see what they say today, I've had it less than a week so I should be able to return it?
