hi guys, seen similar threads here but nothing that totally matches my problem.
for about six months i've had no start stop.
it started around the time that i had flashing mileage. as i understand this means some kind of onboard computer confusion.
i only get the flashing mileage say 1 in 10 times of using the car but the start stop never works.
if i press the start stop on off button i get the message that it's disabled or active but to no avail.
if i should stall the car then depressing the clutch does restart the car - so i think a charge must be in the system.
to add to confusion, i do have an aftermarket radio which is interfaced to the canbus (?) system - could that be involved.
i have tried the 'disconnect the battery for a while' method but that's not helped.
anyone have any ideas? -my local fiat garage want £100+ just to connect the diagnostic computer.

Hi,:)
it's worth attempting the system restore operation,
this can be performed with @£60 of equipment that many forum members own,
where is the car based..??,

I had a 2012 TA from new and for 3 years the stop/start worked perfectly, then worked intermittently for 6 months and finally didn't work at all. Presume a new battery would cure it, but just to keep the stop/start working hardly seemed worth it...

A perfect time line example of a "failure" that's not critical but is telling you something needs fixing or eventually you maybe stranded? most often overlooked by owners thinking "its nothing, its still working"

It's the battery.
Get it tested, and they'll say it's fine .................. but it's still the battery. (y)
£100 ish will get you a new one.

Our 500TA is on her second one and she's recently had her 5th birthday.

Is it worth it?
I reckon it is, because a properly working S/S is wonderful thing.

Regards,
Mick.

What's the typical life of a car battery? - people I speak to think buying a new one 3 years in is far too soon.
plus in my case, when I stall, the charge is there to start again whereas when the start stop is working but empty you can't do that.

You've obviously not talking to folks with real-world experience of owning a S/S equipped Fiat. Getting 3yrs out of a battery before the S/S starts behaving erratically is actually not bad going.

Even a small deterioration in battery performance will prevent S/S from functioning properly; this will happen a long, long time before the battery fails to start the car easily.

Read more about this issue here.

My experience with my 62 plate Punto is thus - purchased it second hand in August 2014. S/S worked fine for the first few months, then erratically, then not at all. The car will however always re-start if stalled (and warmed up). So the S/S system is working in that regard, but the battery level presumably isn't enough for S/S to work normally.

I would therefore be inclined to suggest the battery may well be the cause, however the canbus/flashing mileage would suggest that maybe a proxy alignment is required (if you search this forum I think it should come up).

If Charlie/varesecrazy is able to help then great. Otherwise I would get hold of a good auto electrician in your area and get them to have a look. The boot wiring is always worth looking at as it is the cause of so many electrical issues in the 500.

Either way I'm hopeful that it won't be anything too complex or expensive - fingers crossed!(y)

sounds like a possibility - i'm holding out that my flashing mileage means otherwise.
for what it's worth, when the battery was tested at it's last servicing it was a pass - whether that means 'it will start the car' or not is another thing.

There were a few canbus related faults to clear. Time will tell how things go.

Hopefully update in the coming weeks.

one week and a bit on and no flashing mileage so I'd say some kind of success.
no start stop but from the battery comments I think that's down to that so not to be expected.
still, at least nobody can call me a flasher.
