Technical Fiat 500 warning lights

Technical Fiat 500 warning lights

I had this very thing the only last week.

It's not the battery as it's only a year old and the Stop/Start works perfectly.

I connected my PC with MultiEcuScan and found some error codes and cleared them. Then, I tried again, and more error codes came up plus the warnings again ........ as you describe.

The Fiat 500 is a computer with an engine and wheels. When a computer throws its toys out of the pram, you switch it off and reboot. Rarely is it a hardware problem.

What I did, was to disconnect the battery and go and have a cup of tea.
Half an hour later, I reconnected the battery (and reset the date and time) and all the errors had gone and none of the warnings came up again.

The car has worked perfectly ever since.

Therefore, FIRST thing to do is to disconnect the battery.
Second, have a cuppa.
Third, reconnect the battery, and fourth is reset the date and time.
Fifth is to check if all is well.
If not, repeat the above.

Good luck,
Mick.
HI, I bought my daughter a 50 multijet in November and last month she got the same error messages, seat belt and airbag, and then ful cut-off and the milage went ape. Its mostly just the seat belt and airbag eeros now though. Is this an MOT failure? I will take off the battery tonight, have a coffee and then reconnect. Do I need to diagnostic kit as well? Is any body in the Nottingham area with a kit I could try? cheers Greg

Is this an MOT failure?

Yes, an airbag warning light on is a mandatory fail.

Once you have disconnected the battery, check the hatch wiring carefully; faults are commonly hidden under seemingly sound grommets and insulating tape. Do not attempt to reconnect the battery or run any kind of diagnostics until you are certain the hatch wiring is sound.

Running diagnostics if the hatch wiring is faulty will at best give you a misleading result; at worst, you could do further expensive damage to the car's electronic systems.

HI, did you get the problem fixed? My daughter has the same problem. She gets the seeat belt and airbag warning with the fuel cut-off when she turns the ignition on. When the engine starts the lights go out for about 10 seconds then the seat belt and airbag warning comes back on. It first happened whilst she was driving up the M1. Not going over bumps or anything and with the seat belt on. I thought it must be loose wiring under the seat. It worries me how much you were quoted by Fiat!
cheers
Greg

Hi. I have just experienced this fault driving home this evening. I got the seatbelts, airbags, stop/go warning lights and a message saying that the fuel cut off is not working. Please be patient with my stupid questions. Do I need to detach the battery before I start looking at the light cable thing to check for broken/worn wires? Is it still safe to drive the car with a broken/damaged wire? For example, can I drive her to a garage to get things fixed - is there an actual fault or is it simply the warning light that is broken? Long shot, but has anyone found that it is just the battery after all? It is a scary thing to happen when driving and I am in a bit of a panic.

Yes disconnect the battery, checking the rear hatch wiring issue is a chore you need to remove the outer covering(not the rubber part ) to see the actual wires how old is your car? Yes safe to drive for now.

Thank you. My car is December 2012, so not that old. Sorry to ask more stupid questions but I am not sure what you mean by removing the outer covering but not the rubber part. However, I haven't actually looked at it yet so I expect it will be clearer then . Thanks again.

The hatch wires are covered by a fabric covering, then inside the rubber flexible, you need to pull the rubber flexi away from the "body" of the car, then fold it back on itself to expose the fabric covered wires, then cut the fabric covering to see if any of the hatch cables have snapped, they're very thin and fail due to the cold and constant flexing, note it can be a bit of a struggle to get the flexi back into the body side of the car.
If its confirmed its the hatch wiring issue a repair kit is available(£50) for those who are competent at soldering, what else on the boot lid does not work?, if keeping the car for several more years you can expect "some" repair/replacement bills.

This sounds like it is way beyond my capabilities so will probably be a garage job. Thank you so much for your detailed explanation. It is really annoying, isn't it. I thought I would have more years than this without problems. Ah, well . . . Thanks again.

Hi everyone. Thank you for all your help so far with this wretched warning light problem. I have now had a mechanic check everything - wires seem ok, battery ok, battery turn off/reboot had no effect. He then tried linking it up to the diagnostic machine but it would not cancel the lights or indicate any other way to proceed. Having hit a brick wall, he is booking it into the Fiat garage which I am concerned about due to the cost. So, I just thought I would have one last go on here before we cancel Christmas! Has anyone else got to this point but found a way of fixing things without the help of the manufacturer?
Thank you all again. You have really helped.
