Hi all,

My car has just reached 18,000 miles and the spanner icon is showing saying service coupon expired.

I bought the car end of April and they did a oil and filter change.
How do I get the spanner icon to disappear and will it need a full service? What sort of price would I be looking at for this?

Thanks in advance

well since they did an oil and filter change there is no rush to get everything changed again. you can do a service including all filters + spark plugs, which should cost you about 150 GBP from an independent. Don't go to Fiat it will be 100 GBP more.

If I were you, I would drive it until about 25,000 miles or so then do a proper service all at once, since it would be a waste to change the oil only 3 months after the last change.

You don't actually say how old/what year the car is or which engine model?

The spanner symbol can only be reset diagnostically (as far as I know!)

When you say 'They did an oil/filter change' Who? Fiat or an independent dealership?

Be aware, if you let an independent garage service your vehicle under EU Block Exemption rules, that's fine but I'd highly advise that you ensure that service items/parts used are genuine Fiat parts if the vehicle is still under warranty. This is especially important with oil filters, especially with the TA models. Also be aware, that not all independent garages have access to the Fiat system for carrying out software updates and they may not necessarily be aware of any recalls.

As for cost of resetting the spanner icon, well diagnostics can set you back £60+ depending on where you take the car. It's always worth remembering, that if you let Fiat service the car, diagnostics are carried out and any software updates/recall rectification work, are carried out as part of the service. Be warned though, from experience, I'd highly advise getting more than one quote from two or three dealerships as their prices can and do vary.

You can also buy your own diagnostic kit and do the job yourself, but you need to know what you are doing.

If as the garage you bought the vehicle from claims that they carried out a oil/filter change at 18,000 miles and only in April this year, you must have some sort of warranty with them? Take it back to them and ask them to reset the spanner symbol free of charge!

ahmett, the OP isn't in Greece. I wouldn't personally advise the OP in the way you have. As it stands, we don't know which model he has (could be a diesel!), nor how old the vehicle is and what warranty it has.

I'm sorry to point out, that just because a garage claims to have carried out a oil/filter change, doesn't necessarily mean they have done so. The first 500 I bought from an independent reseller, they did not carry out any form of service on the vehicle because it was still under warranty and hadn't reached the 'book' service schedule period. I subsequently had the first service done by a Franchised dealership.

if the oil is that new, it would be obvious when checking as it would look fairly brown.

if the car is more than 2 years old, you can forget about the Fiat warranty so using Fiat spare parts is pointless and actually a bad idea since Fiat spare parts are known to be of low quality, and I'd still recommend doing what I would do.

You're assuming far too much here ahmett.

As for forgetting the warranty period after 2 years, that is just not so. Both 500's I owned I claimed for warranty work in the 3rd year and successfully too.

If you can afford to, take it to Fiat.

As mentioned they know what's best and the only real down side is the cost.

Least if they f*ck something up they have the full part catalogue, order system, insurance and Fiat backed funding to claim back the expense and will make things right much smoother than some rough bloke who passive aggressively tells you it's 'not his problem' or am I being a bit stereotypical to the typical mechanic?! Haha

an independent garage where I bought it say they carried out the oil and filter change.
It's a 1.2 and 2009

Clearly you've not imparted much information about the history of the car, but 18k on a car that is now almost 7 years old is unusually low, barely 2.5k miles a year.

I'm guessing this car has never seen the light of day at a Fiat dealership for years?

You're well overdue for a cambelt/waterpump change by time because I'm again guessing the job has not been done due to the lack of mileage. However, I'd be getting the job done asap if it can't be proved that it hasn't been done.

It's up to you at the end of the day. The car is completely out of warranty anyway so an independent garage to do any work is probably the most sensible solution. That being said, the car could undoubtedly do with the benefit of a check on Fiat diagnostics. There have probably been numerous software updates over the years. Plus, the car may be subject to recall work that may not have been done that should have been done:
